edited June 2019 in Benign Breast Conditions

hi everyone, I had a biopsy and yesterday I was told it was a Fibroadenoma. Great news! My dr called back after I had already spoken with radiology and she said the mri was amended and she wants me to see a breast surgeon. She had already put the referral in and I got a call same day, I see the surgeon 6/17/19. Her reasoning, to ensure nothing was missed.

Question: do you normally get sent to a surgeon, and do they just take a look or does it end up in a removal?

I see a breast specialist annually already, so I guess going to a surgeon seems strange when the results were benign.

When you do see the surgeon, you can ask specifically why. It might be due to the size. What size was it? My fibroadenoma was only 1.2cm on its largest axis, but the radiologist said if it gets to be 1.5 he'd recommend surgery to remove. It's not likely to turn malignant, but if it grows, it's better to remove when it's smaller, is his thinking. So we're keeping an eye on the size, and that's what will determine if there's surgery in the future for me.

    hi, it’s 1.7 x 0.7 x 0.2 cm. according to the path report.

Maybe that explains it, my dr was adamant that I wasn’t “picky with the dr and take the appt they give, and add yourself to the cancellation list if need be...”.

Confusing...all you hear is benign because that’s all you’re waiting to hear for days. But it’s followed with, well you need to see a surgeon just in case...weird. I am thankful for her thoroughness so I will take heed of her warning. My right breast is a lot larger than the right with some discharge so I guess it’s good to get that set of eyes on it.

Thanks for responding! And I’m glad you’re ok~please keep me posted!

I could be misremembering, but I think the radiologist who did my biopsy and called me with the results said 2cm was the limit for removing it with a lumpectomy, so that’s why he’s keeping an eye on the size of mine. You’ll be able to get a clearer sense when you visit the surgeon.
