Terrified

Hello,
I started having pain in my right breast, shoulder blade and armpit since last 3 days. I can feel a very very small lump and the doctor felt it too. She commented it feels like a cyst but ordered ultrasound and mammogram as my mom was a breast cancer survivor. My appointment is in two days and I am so terrified. The area looks completely normal from outside but hurts when I press it. I know only the test results can give an idea but I am so overwhelmed. Just asking for some support/advice.

Sorry that you are going through this. It is stressful.
May I ask, how old are you? Most breast lumps are benign, but what your lump is mostly likely to be depends somewhat on your age. Different benign conditions are more common at different ages.

I am 52

The waiting is the hardest part. Two days when you're afraid and worried can seem like literally forever. Hang in there. And I agree with Beesie, lumps tend to vary with age, and the odds could be in the majority that it's benign. Please keep us posted. You're not alone.
Hugs.

Thanks. You are right. Waiting is the hardest part. They say cancer doesn't hurt but for my mom it was painful. And that is the reason I am so scared.

The concept that "breast cancer does not hurt" is a popular myth amongst health care providers.
As far as a differential diagnosis of breast pain is concerned, it is far more common for generalized breast pain to be related to a benign condition. It is also often the case that the cause of the pain is never identified.

==========================
The following contains some personal opinions
There is a clinical difference between pain and tenderness, and between diffuse and focal pain. The pain usually described to me is a generalized pain or uncomfortable ache involving most or all of the breast and is more-or-less constant. In the typical scenario when the patient is asked where the pain is, they make a vague hand gesture that encompasses the entire breast. In my experience, the majority of these cases demonstrate no imaging findings and the cause is chalked up to fibrocystic changes. When I examine the breast there is little or no focal tenderness (pain elicited by pressing on it).
But if when asked this question, the patient takes one finger and confidently places it on one location on the breast, they are often tender in that very location, and the odds of finding something on imaging either good or bad, goes up. I am not sure this is backed up by the literature / real science, and no clinical finding is ever 100% reliable, but this has been my experience over the years.

Ok. I can take my finger and place it on one location and it hurts on that very small spot. I can also feel the tiny lump on that same spot.
Only thing is, it hurt for three days but today, the pain after I press on that spot is definitely less. It was spreading in the armpit, that is also 80% gone.
I don't know what all this means, just feeling little better with the pain being less. I am still going to get all the tests done tomorrow. Still worried.

Good luck mermaid10! I had some breast cysts which were benign and somewhat painful. Fingers crossed that your lump is a benign cyst!
-
Thanks a lot. It is so heartwarming when complete strangers wish the very best for you. Really appreciate guys.
-
And the shoulder blade pain has disappeared completely. Just keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow.
-
The symptoms you describe sound more like a cyst than cancer but the ultrasound will tell you which it might be. Keep us in the loop.

Have you had your results? Hope everything’s fine
