24 and terrified of red bump

Hello, I hope this message reaches whoever is reading it in good spirits. A few days ago while lotioning up after a shower I noticeda red bump on my left breast in the area that would be considered “side boob". It is very red and not so much painful just slightly sore when poked at, the bump has a black dot in the middle, kinda raised yet kinda flat at the same time and isn't really warm to touch but the area around the bump is quite red. I don’t think it’s a blackhead as I’ve never had one before and I don’t think there’s anything inside of the bump. All together, I'd say the size of the area of concern is about the size of a quarter. I have been applying tea tree oil and warm compress, I can't tell if it has improved anything at all. Unsure if this matters but I'm 24, 5'8", 200lbs.

I have an appointment with my primary care doctor on the 13th yet anxiety has prompted me to schedule an appointment at the local urgent care for tomorrow.

Of course I googled and was instantly met with IBC.

I guess I'm just here looking for words of encouragement as I await my appointment.I'm away at grad school, I'm an only child, my best friend lives in DC (I'm in Florida) and I lost my mom at 17 so I'm kind of handling the fear alone.

    Hello!

The area you describe does not at all sound like IBC. It could well represent a sebaceous cyst. This is caused by a blocked duct in an otherwise normal oil gland in the skin. The black dot suggests this as a strong possibility. As to why it is red... Sebaceous cysts sometimes get “inflamed” due to a minor infection. This is extremely unlikely to represent IBC. Please follow up with your doctor. Don’t be surprised if a sonogram is ordered. I obviously can’t know what is going on without examining the area. Do follow up with your doctor, and be very optimistic that this will turn out to be benign. Let us know how this turns out

Thank you so much for your response. Essentially you are the first person I’ve spoken to about this so thank you for your comforting words. I will definitely keep you updated

    I wouldn't fret.

You're a young adult lady who lives in a state with very warm weather.

It seems like you're tending to things nicely and you already made a doctor appointment.

My wild guess is that you have a dermatological situation on your hands. Please don't worry!

It is very very hot here. That could have something to do with it also, I’m hoping! Thank you for your response.

I ask myself, if that red bump was on my arm, or knee or butt, would I worry I had cancer?

Any chance it's a bug bite? This time of year, it's a high probability for any funky skin thing.

Of course not because anywhere else doesn’t alarm cancer :(

It doesn’t itch, so I don’t think so. It’s just a little sore.

Zits, bug bites or athletes foot/fungal infections don’t equate to cancer, no matter where on your body they are. Your breasts have skin just like everywhere else. When you hear hoofbeats think horses, not zebras

Seriously, if you have a boil on your butt or your scalp, you don’t decide you have brain cancer but not butt cancer

    MelissaDallas,

You have so much knowledge and have been known to be an asset to this online community. But sometimes you come across as condescending and snarky. This forum should be a safe place, where no question is considered dumb or silly. People are human, and it's ok to ask questions - they don't have all of the knowledge you do. The other day someone called you a bully and unfortunately, *sometimes* I agree. Maybe you could try creating love and positivity, not condescension... If people frustrate you so much with their questions, then don't answer them. :/

    Have a great day.

Thank you so much I thought the same but just thought I was being sensitive because of my current situation.

In defense of MelissaDallas, I think she was trying to inject some common sense (with a dash of humor) into the OP's panic. Maybe it's the fault of the internet, but there have been so many posts lately from young women who are convinced they have IBC, and they need to be talked down off that ledge rather than encouraged to jump. Support does not mean enabling.

Thank you AliceBastable. I am trying to be funny and call for common sense. It is not being a bully to do so. I am just saying look at things from a different angle

Nonetheless, I appreciate all the responses. I can’t speak for others who have posted but my concern is genuine and I only wanted to know if anyone could relate to what I am experiencing. I will update when I get new information. The skin over the sore seems to be peeling now.

Click Here for some information about IBC from a very reliable source if you have not already read it.

Here is my version of this familiar graph. Pay particular attention to the Y axis.

    UPDATE:

The redness jumped to another spot, no head like the original pop up. The original pop up also started peeling, but the redness around it did not spread. The NP I saw thinks it's a staph infection. They prescribed me antibiotics (doxycycline hyclate) and a creme (mupirocin)and thinks it should be back to normal in a few days to a week.

It will probably take a bit for the antibiotics to kick in. Do you have any red streaking leading away from the area?

Hey gb2115, No there aren’t any red streaks. But I am going to give the antibiotics some time to start working. I hope they pain goes first. *fingers crossed
