I am 31. I found a palpable lump 3 weeks ago. Doctor thought it was probably a cyst, but sent me for a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound. Radiologist did not speak with me, but had a nurse navigator schedule the first available biopsy with a breast specialist a week later. Nurse told me that they could see the lump on imaging, but didn’t know what it was. She said the report showed a dilated duct with debris. My doctor received the report and told me that it showed a .5cm mass inside of a duct 2cm from the nipple, and bi-rads 4.

I saw breast surgeon. She did ultrasound and did not see anything inside of a duct. Her ultrasound was older and she did it quicker. She found what she thought was the lump, but it looked completely different from what they measured the other time. She took biopsy samples.

Why would the radiologist report be so different? I feel worried that they were looking at 2 different things, but maybe it’s just my nerves being so frazzled already. I’m going to get copies of the records later today.

Why would the radiologist report be so different?

Radiologists and surgeons have different training. One is trained in image interpretation and the other in surgery. The radiologist will also have a trained, registered ultrasound tech performing the exam. Also in my experience, imaging departments have better equipment than private doctor's offices.

When performing a biopsy the radiologist will place a marker in the breast so mammograms taken afterwards will show exactly where in the breast the biopsy was performed. Also, radiologists issue a report after a biopsy, that is obtainable by the patient.

What should I do? The surgeon couldn't see anything in the duct she looked at- just solid black. Her equipment was dated. She still biopsied the lump, but said it was not related to a duct. I just picked up the radiologist's report and images. Bi-rads is 4b for intraductal debris and possibly mass. The ultrasound images from the Radiologist show a 24mm section of duct that is dilated to 5mm and looks mostly dark grey with some small solid black areas. I'm confused by her seeing nothing different about the ducts when she was trying to ultrasound for the biopsy. Is there any way I can tell by the images if the mass in the others pictures is the same as the grey matter in the duct
