abnormal cells - worried

    Hi. I am 37 years old who found a lump on my left breast in March. It grew from 5cm to 8cm within 1.5 weeks.

    I had a biopsy done with 10ml drained. Cells have returned abnormal.

    My Aunty from my dad's side had breast cancer at the age of 45.

    My specialist said that 7 times out of 10 if they remove the lump it will be benign. He wants to keep an eye on it.

    I started getting severe pain 1 week after the biopsy and the pain radiated from my nipple to under my armpit. I felt like I was having a let-down and bruised. The breast was swollen and hard.

    I just returned from an appointment with my specialist and he conducted another ultra-sound. He said that the lump he drained has returned and suggested another biopsy but said return in 6 months to do this....?

    The pain in my breast is continual and I am not sure that I am 100% confident with my surgeons advice.

    Has anyone else experienced this?

    thank you

    I’ve not experienced this, but if I were you, I would not wait 6 months. Find another doctor that you’re comfortable with. We all have to be more proactive when it comes to our health and it’s our right to get second and even more opinions til we get our answers. I wish you all the best

    I couldn't agree more with Gemma. Do find another doctor.

    Agreed on the second opinion. Many doctors are too quick to tell women to live in pain. Even if they are sure it's not cancer, they owe it to you to actually diagnose and treat you for whatever it is.

    Was this a general surgeon or a breast surgeon who does nothing but breast?

    This is a breast surgeon.

    The GP sent me off for an urgent ultra sound last week due to swelling and pain - the surgeon told me that my breast tissue is dense which can mean i am more prone to cancer. He keeps saying that abnormal cells were found but imaging does not indicate a concern. I have only had the cyst drained not removed and it has returned already (within 6 weeks)....

    Thank you to everyone for your feedback and advice, it is very much appreciated.

    Was it a biopsy or a cyst aspiration? What were the abnormal cells called? Did your pain start before or after the procedure?

    =======

    It is very common for cysts to come back especially if they are aspirated with a very fine needle. I was taught to make as many holes in the cyst as possible after the fluid is aspirated, disrupting the wall of the cyst as much as possible so it doesn't seal back up and refill with fluid. Others advocate injecting them with alcohol or other sclerosing agent to kill the lining cells that produce the fluid.
