Waiting for Diagnostic Mammogram and Ultrasound

I had my annual mammogram on Monday.  I received a call Friday at 4pm stating I needed to come back as soon as possible for a second mammogram and ultrasound.  I was told to be prepared to stay a few hours.  I asked is there anything you can tell me about the report.  The nurse said, "there are changes in your right breast."  She said the radiologist would be there and I would not have to wait for results.

I am so afraid now I am having trouble with anxiety.

I am 45.  I am thinking could perimenopause cause changes in my breast?  Is this what they say so as not to alarm the patient but they already know?  I have had weight loss over the last few months could this cause changes?  I do think my right breast is a little bigger than my left.  I did have a surgical biopsy on my left it was benign.  Could this cause my left breast to be smaller?  Now I feel like my right breast is bigger due to cancer.

I am struggling with anxiety over this.  My back and neck are so achy.  Can anyone share if they had a similar experience and the outcome?  What is next for me?

    Hi jrjr_3,

I too suffer from anxiety and know how difficult the waiting game and unknown can be. Try to find ways to keep busy and stay out of your head.

While the waiting sucks, rest assured that they are on top of it and this will likely turn out to be nothing serious.

    Keeping you in my thoughts.

    Hey jrjr3,

Aging and hormonal changes and random chance can all cause changes in your breasts. It's protocol to follow up, and it's good your imaging center did that. Sometimes the follow up mammogram and ultrasound alone can rule out cancer, sometimes they may need to send you for a biopsy. That's because cancer cannot be confirmed by imaging. So don't panic if they send you for a biopsy either.

On the other hand, almost all breast cancer diagnosed by routine screening mammograms (as yours would be if it does turn out to be cancer) is early stage cancer - very treatable with excellent short term and good long term prognosis.

That said, the waiting sucks. Hang in there!
