Tamoxifen, Osteoporosis, and frustration
My MO referred to me to an endocrinologist to evaluate me for taking Al's even though I've got severe osteoporosis, and way before cancer. I also wanted more specific information about the action of the Tamoxifen and remember the MO telling me that it is easier on the bones or even improves bone density. Also, that it has the same action on the bones as other SERM medications which are prescribed for osteoporosis as well as preventative for breast cancer.
So this specialist told me that to improve bone density I would need to take an osteoporosis drug and that Tamoxifen won't help. I explained that my stomach problems are going to prevent me from taking another irritating medication. At least while undergoing Tamoxifen treatment. He tried to suggest several medications of which I've already researched those years ago and decided not to continue due to side effects.
I'm so frustrated with spending over an hour explaining that I'm not going to take another medication right now as I can barely make it through with the Tamoxifen side effects, and preventing cancer recurrence is my priority now. The app't ended with the doctor to contact my previous osteoporosis doctor ( I okay this) for a history of treatment. Also, he would order some tests, and try and get insurance to pay for another bone density test in a year instead of waiting two years to see what effect the Tamoxifen has.
I don't even want to go back there. If I thought the doctor's goal was to pressure me into an osteoporosis medication on top of Tamoxifen I wouldn't gone to the app't. Plus, I had questions about how the Tamoxifen works which he couldn't answer. What do you guys think? Is anyone taking both Tamoxifen and an osteoporosis medication at the same time.

Yes I was taking both at the same time. I took Tamoxifen for 4 years. My MO started me out on Arimidex which wasn’t smart given at the time I had osteopenia and Arimidex attacks the bones. Only when I pointed this out to her did she switch me. I now have osteoporosis so I truly feel your pain. It has been brutal at times. I also take Boniva, Vit D3 and calcium. Tamoxifen had zero impact in strengthening my bones.
I totally agree your number #1 priority is to ward off a recurrence however, I have not had any issues taking both of them. Frankly the damage was already done anyway.
I get really tired of these doctors constantly prescribing meds. More and more women are refusing them for a myriad of reasons.
Good luck whatever you decide.

edwards750,
Thanks for responding. I've got time to think about what to do.
