Hi, I have posted before and I appreciate all the feed back. I got a birads 3 report at my first screening ultrasound after a negative mammogram. I have what is thought to be a fibroadenoma. 1 cm. Also a complicated cyst,( doesn't concern me as much, I have fibrocystic breasts. Can anyone who is been through the watchful waiting schedule of every six month rescans tell me a positive personal story of getting to the other side?.. Anyone get there without eventual biopsy, due to suspicious changes?. Trying to build a positive mental loop. Thanks ;)

I love the positive mental loop idea!

Just to recap: Nov 2018 my annual mammogram returned with questionable asymmetry. This lead to a tomo mammogram and diagnostic ultrasound. The asymmetry was a non issue confirmed by previous mammograms since 2015. However, a tiny, less than 3mm mass was detected. I was given a birds 3 score and a short term follow up of 6 months.

All of this caught me off guard and I struggled with what this could mean going forward.

I did get a referral to a specialist so I could unpack a lot of the terminology and ask all the questions I had. That appointment really helped out my mind at ease. It also was very informative in terms of knowing that I would be followed to 2 years in 6 month intervals. It is suspected that my mystery mass is a fibroadenoma.

Today was my 6 month follow up scan. I am relieved to say that the mass was stable. No change. They will see me again in 6 months for a repeat ultrasound scan and my annual mammogram.

I’ve only begun the journey but I hope that sharing this helps. This site has been a fabulous resource for me.

Over the years I've had several BIRADs3 and none ever led to a cancer diagnosis or even a biopsy.

I've also had many biopsies due to BIRADs4 imaging, and most of those have turned out to be benign.

I'm a pretty good representation of the stats, which say that 2% or fewer of BIRADs 3 are cancer, and only about 20% - 30%of BIRADs 4 are cancer.

Thank you so much Bessie and Buddy Rock. And I agree Buddy this site is a lifeline of support. So glad to have gotten to speak with such kind and generous women, sharing their storries. .

I get called back all the time for stuff. In 2008 I had a diagnostic mammogram and a sonogram for an incidental finding during a CAT scan after a car accident. I told it was benign (probably a fibroadenoma). There was no follow-up, probably because my husband was seriously injured in the accident and they decided I had other things to worry about.

In 2015, I had my first routine mammogram (after turning 40). I got called back and had a biopsy on what turned out to be a 2.5 cm fibroadenoma. My 1.3 cm benign mass was still there and was deemed stable. I went back in 6 months and nothing changed.

In 2016 everything was fine--no changes.

In 2017 I had another routine mammogram and was called back for what turned out to be a 5mm cyst.

In 2018 everything was fine - whew.

In 2019 (just yesterday), I had my routine mammogram and have to go back AGAIN. This time they are seeing a 1.3 cm asymmetry on the MLO view. They want to make sure that it is the same 1.3 mass found in 2008, since it is the same area. However, it has never appeared on that view before. If it is not, I will probably have to have another biopsy. But I am not really worried.

I think some people just get called back a lot. The girl who did my last sonogram said I have "busy breasts."
