Mx and over 65: long was your hospital stay?
My mom is having a mastectomy (left breast) at a hospital. One of her doctors said she may be able to go home same day, someone else said overnight. We know everyone is different but she’s wondering how long was your stay? She’s a healthy 76 yr old, so we are especially interested in hearing from those over 65. Thank you

I was 62 with BMX. Overnight in hospital like an out patient.

Good to know, thank you spookiesmom.

I was 63 at the time of my last mastectomy and I stayed overnight. My BS said that I could opt to go home the same evening after surgery, but, as a nurse of many years I wanted to stay overnight in case of any unforeseen bleeding issues etc
-
I had a late surgery, stayed overnight...then actually went home after a full 24 hours in the room for pain control. Insurance covered and I had Aflac. I was so ready to go home though

I was 63 when I had a UMX (modified radical mastectomy) 8 yrs ago. I was in the hospital overnight and had no problems at all.
If there are other health issues that could have an effect on how long a post surgery hospitalization might be. I had no health issues (other than arthritis in upper back).

I truly think it is best if they keep her overnight. Ask them for a 23 hour stay. I wasn't 65, but lived out of town and it was truly helpful to have that overnight stay. I have to have my remaining breast removed soon and am going to ask for an overnight stay.
My mom was 80 when she had a Lumpectomy, and it was out-patient.
Sending my best wishes!

Unicornhorns, I am 68 and stayed overnight for a mastectomy of my right side, no recon.
Before I went home, the hospital gave me a handout explaining "Medicare outpatient observation." When you are a hospital outpatient, your observation stay is covered under Medicare Part B.
Good luck to your Mom!

Thank you everyone for the feedback! It's very helpful. My mother also said to thank you for the well wishes and she hopes all of you are making speedy recoveries.

I stayed two nights for my BMX, but I also had reconstruction done the same day. They were kicking me out after that!
-
I stayed overnight..ordered by my doctor. .Admitted at 7:30am and went home after a full 24 hours released 10am the following day.
Before I went home, the hospital never discussed nor gave me a handout explaining "Medicare outpatient observation."
Just received a letter from hospital that I am considered outpatient, and will be responsble for the bill.
