Three Weeks Post...Still Struggling A Bit

Hi Everyone,

I’m just trying to gauge how my recovery is going with others who had surgery recently. I know everyone is different, but it’s just interesting to see where we all are at this point!

So, my chest hurts. A lot. I had a left masectomy with skin sparing and immediate reconstruction. I had a lift on the right breast. By the end of the day is when it all hurts the most and by 3:00 pm I’m usually back in bed.

Energy is improving. I can go to the store (not driving yet) and do a few things but it still really tires me out to do too much. I’m definitely not resuming my normal life at this point. I seem to need a lot of energy to heal still and resting is what feels right.

I wasn’t feeling well for two year before DX, so that’s probably a factor. The node arm is getting better but still stiff.

I guess I’d say I’m half-way through recovery. I’m going to be a 6-week girl, I think. I’m eating well and making sure I get up and move around and get a little more adventurous each day, but I’m feeling like a slow-poke.

What have the weeks been like for you?

Thanks for adding your thoughts

I had a bmx on 4/25 and can relate. I was just yesterday telling my sister that after not lying down for a whole day my foobs and surrounding area were killing g my by bedtime. I won't do that again. I did start driving after just under a week of the surgery because I was off the "good drugs" but was very cautious. I realized I did way to much the first week after surgery and do not do that now. They are still soar and have had air added twice to the tissue expanders. The size is good so that will be that. See my PS next Weds.

I had my bmx in January. I remember by week 3 I didn’t need painkillers, but still felt swollen and sore. I also found that I got very tired very quickly whenever I tried to do any normal daily activities. It takes time to build up your strength again. I took full advantage of the 6 weeks off work, and when I returned it confirmed to me I couldn’t have managed if I went back sooner.

You’re not a slow poke, don’t over stretch yourself. A few more weeks and things will feel drastically better.

    Thanks for your replies!

Someone was telling me about a friend who went out to dinner two nights after her double MX and I was pretty aghast. Even if it was possible to command the energy, why would you do that to your body? What are you trying to prove?

This is not a pulled tooth. This is major surgery which often requires seven or more hours in the OR. But who am I to judge?

My body needs rest. I’m giving it what it needs. Period.

I had a BMX a little over 2 weeks ago. I am sort of sore but the itching is driving me crazy. My drains are out but I am "leaking" on the side where the cancer wasn't The doc explained that there is a cavity between the muscle and the skin that needs to close up and any fluid in there will leak out. Ok. Got that. But one thing he said is that I will always be numb where the incision is. (That is across the top of my chest) Anyone else experience this?

I would say your experience is similar to mine. I am 4 weeks out and still getting sore and wanting to lie down by mid afternoon, although it has been a steady improvement and my energy is starting to come back.
