Just wanted to check in, having just had a decent night’s sleep in my own bed. Surgery was Thursday morning and I was discharged from hospital Friday, less than 24 hours after my surgery.

Overall, I’m feeling better than expected. I’m exhausted and in pain and the two drains are annoying, but yesteray I was able to walk around, do basic things. Once these stupid drains are out, I can imagine how much better I’ll feel.

I wasn’t able to look at the incision site when the nurse changed my dressing before I left the hospital, but I figure I’ll look when I’m ready.

For those of you with surgery coming up this week, I honestly found the waiting to be worse than the main event. Right now I’m managing with Tylenol. Mostly I just want these drains out

Momoftwo and tiggie, I am glad your surgery is done and wishing you a speedy recovery. And thank you for sharing your experiences, it helps so much.

Happy birthday meeko, hope you enjoy your special day.

My surgery is less than a week away. I created a list of tasks I wanted to complete before the surgery and made it so long that in a away it helped with reducing surgery related anxiety.

    Wishing everyone a nice weekend.

Hi Cmck1973, I wish you all the best with your upcoming surgery. Breast cancer just sucks. That's the reality. I recommend listening to guided meditations on YouTube to help with the anxiety. They have a bunch of good ones suited to your tastes. There are some related just to dealing with cancer, and some guided sleep meditations that I listen to to help me sleep when I'm stressed. Jason Stephenson does some that I like. My son bought me some headphones on Amazon that were cheap and they're like a headband with flat circles for headphones so nothing goes in your ears. Try and think of the cost of your genetic testing as an insurance policy for the present and future women in your family. At least everyone will know what your genetic factors are. I had to pay for my testing, too although I'm still waiting on the bill. Insurance sent me a letter that they wouldn't be covering it. But, at least now I know that I don't carry any of the genes for breast cancer and my granddaughter will know that she doesn't carry those genes on my side. Take care! Soon your surgery will be a memory and you can focus on your future. ~Mobetta

    Thanks JulieSim.

Trying to get things in order... Not sure if I'll be staying the nite or being released the same day. Don't know what to pack if I do stay a night... Stomach is upset, for good reason, my chest will never be the same after tomorrow... and I know this surgery won't cure me... sigh!

Day 5 since 5/1 BMX. Continuing to do well, manageable pain with Tylenol. I am now desperate for a good hot shower but my dr told me sponge bath only for the first week.... yuck!!! Thank god it's not summer yet.

My husband offered to help to wash my hair over a sink but I just couldn't imagine how that could work..... and how he would blow dry my hair I didn't even want to think about that! LOL. Then I remembered that there was a small Asian family owned nail/hair salon near by so I walked in to to see if I can get a shampoo and blow dry. They were so sweet, when I told them I had been unable to shower or wash my hair due to breast cancer surgery, they insisted that they provide the service for FREE as a get well gift / Mother's Day gift. Oh my gosh, I think I wanted to cry there for the first time, experiencing completely unexpected strangers' sympathy and love. Shampoo /blow dry was so refreshing!!!!

So ladies, if you can find a neighborhood salon that can help with hair washing/drying, I'd highly recommend!

Everyday, I feel like my movements are improving. I can brush my hair from top of my head without excruciating pain, I could also wear a T-Shirt today. Not limited to front-button shirts anymore.

I am planning on going grocery shopping with my family later today, so I can stock my fridge for the week, while I am home all week during the day by myself. I think I can manage to cook fine. so in terms of daily activities, I can do pretty much 7 out of 10 things, I'd say. I cannot carry heavy laundry baskets or reach high in cabinets. I'd like to seep the backyard but will wait on that.

I have had 2 C-section births and if I had to compare those surgeries to this BMX / Recon surgery, I would say C-Section surgery recovery was much harder. With C-section, the pain is in the abdomen so anything / everything you do hurts, where as BMX pain only hurts in limited movements. With C-Section, you are also getting zero sleep, having to feed / change new-born baby every 2 hours, while having to care for your wounds and bleeding "down there", and the focus is mainly on the new born baby's well-being and yours is secondary. I also had time with breastfeeding / latching /diet restriction, so there was added stress there too. With BMX recovery, you can completely focus on yourself. : )

Just my 2 cents, for those of you who have experienced C-section surgeries for a frame of reference

Post-of Appt tomorrow with PS tomorrow. I need to address with him the "dog ears" or "arm pit fat" or axillary bulge I am seeing above my expanders that are very unsightly.... Just learning that this is very common after BMX. I hope I can have them removed, reading various threads on reconstruction on this site now.

Christene50: Best of luck to you, I am thinking of you this morning and sending positive vibes your way.

Cmck1973: Thank you. That's nice to hear. Hopefully it'll be the same for me. I had a good weekend and really didn't think about surgery much, but today I am starting to feel anxious. Oh well, perfectly normal I suppose.

I'm glad to hear that Mumoftwo and Tiggie are recovering well. I have been scoping out salons for a hair wash after my surgery (I love my husband, but I'm not sure I want him washing my hair!).

Christene50, I am sending lots of good thoughts your way today. Check in when you feel like it.

Mobetta, in addition to the youtube videos, I have found the "calm" app on my phone to be very helpful to help me sleep on nights when my mind can't stop racing.

My surgery is Thursday, and I think I have all my ducks in a row. I am working up until surgery, so that helps to keep my mind off of everything.

Here's wishing everyone a wonderful week!

Hi everyone. I hope those that had surgery are healing quickly and those upcoming find calmness and healing, too. Tomorrow is my second Mastectomy. I'm still not healed from Feb. 27th surgery. Truncal lymphadema and minor arm lymp. I have a great specialist and she taped me well, which has made a huge difference.

I wonder if the surgeons ever consider using pediatric drain tubes. My drain tube left me so very sore, even after all these months. I am very small framed and have scoliosis (lucky me I have MS, too, so worried about a flare). I did struggle with severe constipation, so stay on top of that ladies.

So tomorrow is a PMX. Insurance approved it without a hassle. One item that has me a bit upset is Invitae did the genetic testing. The nurse from surgical office called them prior to testing to check pricing. They told her that they will accept whatever insurance pays, plus $100 maximum. Friday I rec'd a bill for $300! I called them today and all lines were busy for 20 minutes. I left a return number, but no one ever called back. I plan on fighting that bill.

Best wishes everyone for a healthier tomorrow.

Irishlove, hope all went well today.

So, today I had one of my two drains taken out. Based on everything that I had read I had not expected it to hurt, but it hurt a lot! I’ve also had pain all day since. I really hope having the second drain taken out isn’t this bad.

I can’t wait until both are out. I also looked down at my chest for the first time today while they were changing the dressing. It looks horrific with all of the staples in, but I didn’t freak out the way I think I would have even two days ago.

Good luck to everyone having surgeries this week

Mum, thanks for the heads up about the drains. I will keep that in mind when the time comes!

Irishlove, I hope your surgery went well and that your recovery also goes very well. I would think the risk of a pediatric drain tube getting clogged because of the smaller diameter would make docs not want to chance it, but I bet there is no research about that. It is an interesting idea and I like the way you think. I will be curious to see how your PMX (without SN biopsy) compares with your first MX recovery wise.

Surgery is tomorrow. My brave front is fading fast and I kind of want to vomit, but all we can do is just keep moving forward and be as positive as we can!

Hang in there meeko. Honestly, the day before my surgery was also my worst. I felt sick all day. I didn't want ot talk to anyone or do anything. I was in hiding by myself. Once you wake up from your surgery tomorrow, you'll be surprised at how much better you feel not having the dread of it hang over you.

I'll be thinking of you tomorrow. In the meantime, try to get some solid sleep tonight. I didn't sleep at all properlywhile I was in the hospital

Thoughts wth the ladies that recently had surgery and those that are soon to have surgery!!

Mumoftwo- I had one drain that I swear new tissue grew around, had 3 tubes for 3 weeks, and when that one removed holy crap that hurt!! The other 2 came out without any pain or issues!! I hope your other tube doesn't hurt like your first!!

Those that are soon to have surgery don't forget to strip the tubes line they recommend, 2 of my 3 became plugged and drained outside and down side and onto my clothes. Thankfully my BS told me to use a liner to catch the drainage, lol.

    Thoughts to all you ladies!!

    Hi Ladies!

I was diagnosed with Invasive Mammary Carcinoma last month in my left breast, and during the many tests they found cancer in the right breast as well (ILC). They don't think it is in my nodes, so that is great!

I'm really happy to be at a great comprehensive cancer center- everything has been integrated and they are happy to do all the tests I've needed. I feel like I'm in good hands- although I have had to push to keep things moving quickly.

My double mastectomy with reconstruction is scheduled for May 15th. I'm currently feeling relieved to be doing something about it, the waiting and worry about cancer spreading has been pretty awful. I like both my BS and my PS, so I feel like that's really a plus.

Good luck to everyone else having surgery this month! Fingers are crossed for me!

Meeko, I hope your surgery went well. Let us know when you have a chance.

I got my injection today, my surgery is tomorrow morning. I was quite busy during the day, but at this point I just feel that I don't want to see anyone anymore and need my space.. Will probably go to bed early and try to fall asleep.

Good luck tomorrow JulieSim. I was the same way the day before surgery. I wanted to be alone. It helped me get into the right headspace. This time tomorrow it will be done!

I had my second drain out today. It was not at all painful. The nurse thinks that Tuesday’s was painful because the tissue had started to grow around it. I believe it! I thought I was going to pass out. Glad to have the drains out, but I’m really swollen and sore. Hoping to get a good night’s sleep though

Checking in for an update... Day 10 post BMX. Got both of drains out today! It was not painful at all. With the drains out and being on no medication, I have an ok to drive. Woo hoo! Slowly but surely gaining back normalcy, one step at a time! Breasts look fine, (I had nipple sparing), numbness starting to go away from shoulder / upper arm area. I know I wasn't supposed to but needed to stretch so did some gentle yoga.... that felt good. I will see PS next week for a first fill into my Expander will hereon focus on reconstruction.

Good luck to everyone having surgeries this month!

I just wanted to post a positive experience. I had a lumpectomy and sentinel lymph node biopsy on May 1. It was day surgery and I was back home by 5:30 pm. After 48 hours, the pain was easily managed with extra strength Tylenol and by day 5 post-op I had stopped that as well.

I was surprised at how much mobility I had from day 1. Now I'm struggling to remember not to lift anything heavy on that side. I do have discomfort but nothing excruciating.

I went for genetic testing yesterday and my follow up with the surgeon is May 27 for next steps.

I just wanted to post to let others know that it is possible to come out of the surgery and have an okay recovery. I know I'm lucky and hope others are doing well in their recovery.

First day after the surgery, leaving the hospital now. I was in a lot of pain at night but did get some sleep. I think I have way more options for pain meds at home compared to whatever I was given in the hospital, so hopefully it will work out. I am very tired and slow, so I am afraid of how my 3 and 6 years old kids will be accepting me when I return.

Good luck for those having surgery next week, and speedy recovery to those after their surgery!

    Hello, all!

Surgery on Thursday went well (single MX with sentinel node bx and direct to implant). I wish I could have gone home the day of surgery, but they kept me overnight.

I am post op day 3. I am obeying the restrictions on arm movements, but have been doing a fair amount of of walking with my arm in a sling to keep my arm from swinging.

I haven't needed any narcotics today.

I only have one drain, but I am getting a fair amount of bloody drainage around the drain site. I will call PS tomorrow and make sure that isn't anything he is worried about.

The new breast looks great from above, but from the front it is a little jarring (frankenstein type scar and the swelling makes it look mishapen. It still makes me cry a bit when I see it. I know it will get better, and I know this is my new normal and it is better than cancer.

I should have pathology back when I see BS for postop check on Tuesday.

Thanks to everyone for checking in, and I continue to keep all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

Well hi everyone. Hope you are healing well. I'm 5 days out and this surgery was easier then the first mastectomy in Feb. Range of motion is much better as is the lower pain level. I tried the could you use a pediatric tube (hey I am under 5 ft.) but it was a no go. It was due to the clotting concerns. Nice try, huh? I caught my drain tube on a kitchen drawer handle and it about took me to the ground. The drainage is low enough that I probably would have been ok, but happy the tube stayed attached.

I am having a very tough time with my bowels. Difficult to discuss, but it is taking it's toll on me. It started with severe constipation after last surgery, trip to ER (with CT) to rule out appendicitis. Oh boy am I taking all kinds of meds to get things going. My concern is the stools are narrow, tapered and blood tinged on tissue. I spoke with surgeon about it, nurses about it and here we are same situation. I have MS and surgeon suspects that an MS flare is affecting the bowel. I tried to push up my colonoscopy, but have to wait a few more weeks due to risk of infection. Thanks everyone for being there for...everyone.

Irishlove I am so sorry you are dealing with bowel issues. It sounds like this is not new to you, so I am sure you have already tried things like oatmeal and over the counter laxatives. Our pediatric GI docs here have their constipated kids use 3 capsful of Mralax in 32 ounces of Gatorade for bowel clean outs. Again, you have probably tried everything, so that probably isnt helpful to you. I hope you find something that works!

My third day post op today. I had right mastectomy with tissue expander insertion under pec muscle. I am wearing compession bra and doing exercises as advised by PT (very simple ones for days 1-6 post op). I attended preop sessions and kept asking everyone so many times about restrictions - and the response has always been like no heavy lifting, but definitely stay active and listen to your body. The problem is that I have always been doing a lot of stuff at home. My range of motion is pretty good, I manage well on tylenol, gabapentin and celebrex without opioids, so I have been walking and doing some light activities like folding kids' laundry and such.

Yesterday in the evening I felt some nerve pain in the armpit area, and I literally saw how my breast went one size up in just a couple of hours! With some swelling on top of my breast going all the way to the armpit.. I immediately stopped all the activity with my right arm, kept it elevated overnight, and switched to more tight bra. My jp has been working great for the entire time.

I spoke with the nurse in the morning, she looked at my pictures and suggested it's normal and keep monitoring, I asked again about restrictions and was told to listen to my body and do the exercises.

I am kinda overwhelmed because I believe all this sudden swelling could be easily avoided if I wasn't physically active..

Now I am trying to look for any practical advice of how to make this swollen area go - and there's nothing. Just waiting game and I will be in touch with the nurse if things get worse.

Sorry for the long rant, it's just so weird, I feel like I knew better what meds to take for pain, I ended up changing my first surgery dressing.. and I have been asking so many questions about post op activity, I wish someone told me just not to do ANYTHING at all..

Talking about out bathroom issues, not an easy thing to discuss, unless you're an open minded person and can handle it...

I had my BMX 5/6 I only took 1 pain pill at night just so I could sleep... By the third day, I realized I haven't gone to the bathroom, clogged by the meds... I stopped taking the pain pill and started taking stool softener. Now, somewhat ok, still have issues... Meds can mess us up in so many ways....

Meeko- please allow your arm to swing. The sling decreases movement and movement is good to help move any fluid out. Just follow any restrictions your doctor's gave you. Nothing where your arm goes above your head.

For those dealing with constipation issues... increase your water intake and try and increase your movement. Those 2 things will hopefully help. If they don't try Miralax, or the generic works just as good. Make sure to mix it with 6-8 oz fluids and drink it all!! Take that daily until you have a good movement.

Julie- I'm sorry the swelling is bothering you but you just had major surgery!! You will have swelling, even with compression, for multiple weeks! It's totally normal and to be expected. Some people have swelling after this type of surgery for months. I was told not to expect to see the true result for about 6 months! My BXM was in November and I think my significant swelling went away in late December/ early January. I totally understand wanting your body back to normal though!! If anything the drains will show to much too soon by increased drainage and possibly increased blood in drainage.

    Thoughts with all you ladies!!

    ~Katie 💗
