Healing before radiation?

Options

All: I had a lumpectomy and breast reduction on April 17th. The incisions are still healing, although I am making progress.

I hope to start radiation no later than May 27th because of a family vacation I have the first week of July. (I will be doing four weeks of radiation). I asked for and got a date for a planning session on Monday, May 13th. if I am not all the way healed for that session, can they still do the planning?

Anything I can do to accelerate healing? (I am eating protein). What was your experience in starting radiation?

Thanks so much for advice!

My guess is you'll be good to go, but it's up to your surgeon to decide when you've healed enough to start rads. I think 4-6 weeks is a typical timeframe, and be sure to let them you know you're trying to get started as soon as possible. The planning session is typically just scans/measurements/pictures/marking, so should be okay even if you're not completely healed.

    Hi atl!

According to the main Breastcancer.org site's page on Delayed Wound Healing:

Eat citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, whole grains, lean meat, fish, and eggs. These foods have nutrients that help promote wound healing. During the healing process, your body needs increased amounts of calories, protein, vitamins A and C, and sometimes the mineral zinc.

We hope this helps and send you best wishes for a speedy recovery!
