I have 4 lumps, 1 cyst and 3 fibroadenoma per ultrasound, no biopsy. I go for a six month follow up this week with a ultrasound on the lumps. Do fibroadenoma usually stay the same or can they grow? I am just worried they could’ve grown. I’m 36 so know I’m at the age to get them. They have not mentioned biopsy due to BiRads 3 but will they need to be removed if grew? Is it a one day surgery? Sorry for all the questions. I’m hoping they have shrunk since my October appt. Thanks everyone! God blesd

If there are enough benign features of the FA visible on the US, a biopsy may not be recommended.

FA's are benign but they do grow, and they grow at different rates and this is why they are followed. If they are stable over a number or exams they are left alone. If they are increasing in size quickly (there are guidelines for % growth / time) removal is recommended. I believe the surgery is an outpatient /short stay situation in a hospital or surgicenter.

Hi SaintsDoll9, I've had a number of cysts and fibroadenomas. Yes, fibroadenomas can grow, but they also can stay the same or shrink. I've had a few removed surgically. Each was done in a surgical theater, but I was still sent home the same day. Tracking growth with ultrasounds is pretty standard. My fibroadenomas never appeared on mammograms, due mostly to my dense breast tissue, I think.

Not to scare you, but still get regularly screened for breast cancer. I've had doctors assure me I was low risk for BC because of my cyst and fibro- history. Woo, were they wrong.
