I was diagnosed with breast cancer on April 8th. I’m having a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery on May 8th. I really want a recliner to sleep in because I hate sleeping on my back. However I don’t want to buy one because we have nowhere for it long term. I’m just thinking I would like to use one for the first few weeks to sleep in and that it would be a lot easier on me. does anyone know of any organizations in Houston Texas that help women and loan out recliners or rent them? Thank yih

    Dear Valleygirl1074,

Welcome to the BCO community. We are sorry about your diagnosis but glad that you reached out to our members. We hope that your surgery goes well and that you stay active here through your recovery. We notice that you have not received any responses to your question. One thought would be to use the search function in the blue tool bar. You can do a search for recliner and possible find others who are or have used them. It would offer you some specific members to reach out to via pm. You can also so a search of Houston and find others in your area.

Keep us posted and let us know if we can be of further help.

Valleygirl, this sounds like the right sort of project for a local cancer charity. Maybe there is one that would provide a small grant, or find a local furniture store willing to help out. I would start calling around and asking for ideas. A brief internet search I didshowed a charitable organization in Houston called The Rose. They assist with paying for medical care but maybe they would know who might help provide a recliner. Also there is one called Breast Cancer Resource Center that looks like the right sort of place. Also ask the social workers at your cancer hospital. Or local charity or business groups. Good luck!

Hi Valleygirl. I expect there are many furniture rental companies that would have recliners. Also I'd check with family, friends, and neighbors to see if there is one you could borrow for a few weeks. Best to you.

if you can’t find a recliner, you may be able to rent a medical bed.

I am like you and have a strong distaste for sleeping on my back. I looked at getting a recliner also and am glad I couldn't end up affording it. You wouldn't want one that you would have to pull the arm or any button for as stretching and engaging your chest area can ne painful, and the electric ones that recline enough to be comfortable to sleep in are really expensive.

I went to Sam's club and bought 3 body pillows and 2 packs of 2 pillows and i literally cocooned myself and it actually worked really well. Reg pillows under head and torso, body pillows on sides and under knees to prevent sliding down.

    Best of luck!!

I never gave thought to a recliner, though if I had one I might have used it. I am not a back sleeper either. I basically built a pillow throne in my bed. A bed wedge with some pillows on top and stacked pillows supporting my arms. If I wanted to recline a bit more, I removed a pillow from behind my back. My point is, a recliner is not necessary and pillows are your friend. Best wishes

I am having left SMX on May 9. I went to look at buying a recliner this weekend, but like you I don't really have a need for a recliner long term and so paying $300+ for a recliner seemed silly. After shopping, I learned that Lazy Boy is the brand I like best and then I checked facebook marketplace and Craiglist for used ones. I found a clean, barely used one (from a lady currently undergoing radiation for DCIS, incidentally) for $140. I figure when I am done, I will try to sell if for $100 or give it to someone on our local BC group who needs it for her mastectomy recovery. Anyway, used is another option. Good luck in any event!
