A bit of background. Just turned 46 and for about a year I’ve experienced sharp electric shock type pains in right breast that come and go and don’t seem to be cyclical. Also both nipples get very itchy and flaky, again that comes and goes. I had one episode of very slight bleeding from nipple in October but nothing since.

I had a clear mammogram and ultrasound in January this year and consultant was not concerned and told me to keep an eye out.

Fast forward to today, someone hugged me and I cried out in pain, There’s an area on my right breast that is extremely tender. It seems to be limited to one area on the areola. If I look closely I can also see a smooth area that is slightly red, again confined to the areola where the pain is. It feels like a bad bruise when pressed and also hurts if I move a certain way.

Now I’m worrying about inflammatory bc. I can’t help feeling there’s something going on in there. It was so hard to get a referral in the first place. I should add that I’m menstruating now too.

Can anyone shed any light please

Could it be hormone related? I had pain & nipple rash. My pcp ordered a mammogram which was clear. I was able to get in with dermatologist & got a punch biopsy. That ruled out Pagets or IBC. I would suggest you go to dermatologist rather than any other doctor.

I am so sorry. IBC is so scary and so tricky. Please go see your doctor, be your own advocate. You need an MRI . If they see something abnormal in the MRI a core biopsy would be done. You can also see a dermatologist for a skin punch biopsy but it has a 25% false negative when it comes to IBC. I am currently waiting for results from an MRI guided core biopsy, praying we don't have ibc

Is it possible that you have thrush? Yeast infection in the ducts can be quite painful.

Thank you for your replies. I’ve just been to the walk in centre in the hope they would give me antibiotics to try, as it will be a little while before I can speak to a breast specialist. They said they don’t see any sign of infection and couldn’t give me any.

The redness is spreading, although it’s still very faint, and the breast feels warm and hard to the touch. Obviously I’m thinking it can only be ibc now if they don’t think there’s an infection. I’m struggling to act normal at home. I don’t want to upset my daughter. I don’t know what to do now.

    Hi Emmeline,

Can you get into your family doctor, obgyn, or a dermatologist? If they think what they see is suspicious for IBC, they should be able to get you in for a punch biopsy quickly. If not, they should be able to calm your mind and suggest alternative diagnosis and treatment.

Try not to worry too much. We get to a certain age and think we know and understand our bodies. But actually with our hormones and aging, we are always changing, and our bodies can spring unpleasant but also not serious surprises on us. Whatever is going on with your breast, it is worth following up because it is impacting your quality of life. But chances are it is something much less serious/dire than IBC.
