7mm Solid Mass Left Breast

I don't know the proper "lingo" for all that I'm dealing with...sorry. Had sore left breast (no external signs), and I could pinpoint a certain spot, although I wasn't sure if I felt a lump. Went to ob/gyn. She wasn't sure if she felt anything, but she was concerned about the intensity of pain. She ordered a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound, which I had today. They found a 7mm solid mass (gave me no other details, and I had to ask for the size) and have me scheduled for an Ultrasound-Guided Core Needle biopsy this Friday at 9am.

First, at this early stage of the game, are there questions I should be asking or things I should be researching / considering / doing prior to going in for the biopsy on Friday?

Second, from my reading, this is a small and probably contained situation that will be easily treated. I asked them why they must do the needle biopsy rather than simply removing it, and the nurse said, "It may not need to be removed." I can't imagine keeping this thing! The pain is pretty bad. So, pretending that it's benign, is there something they can do besides surgery to eliminate a benign lump? Trying to understand why I wouldn't want it removed surgically...

Any insights helpful and appreciated...

    hi Deb,

So sorry about your pain and worry. How old are you and what is your pain rate on a scale of 1-10

I turned 50 in December. Both breasts are more sensitive than normal (like they would be before a period, but it doesn't go away), and when they push on the area in question, it's easily an 8 or 9. When I turn in bed or reach for something, I'll feel that spot sometimes at a 5 or 6 level. If I'm just sitting here, no pain.

Can you post your complete mammo and US reports?

Here is some information on breast pain

It is standard of care to biopsy all solid masses first. An excisional biopsy is different from a lumpectomy, they are not interchangeable procedures. If there is no needle biopsy first you run the risk of having two separate surgeries to treat one lump. Breast surgeons like to avoid that.

hi! I am having the exact same as you! Had my annual mammo last week. They called me in for an ultrasound. Then he says he would like to do a biopsy just Incase. That scared me! Said my spot is 7mm solid and just wants to check. Never had problems before. Breast have been sore especially my left. I'm in menopause age 47. I have been a wreck all week. Biopsy is finally tomorrow Friday. Good luck to you! I will pray for you
