Are you supposed to get a BIRAD score after diagnostic mammo?

April 12 I had my 6 month follow up after a biopsy for benign calcifications. It was a diagnostic mammogram (not screening mammogram) Although the radiologist met with me after and reassured me everything was fine, 5 days later I got a letter from the imaging center. It was very nondescript, only saying there was “a finding” on my mammogram and that a sonogram is recommended.

It said “your breasts are dense” and that was followed by a paragraph explaining that patients must be told they are dense because of some legislation in my state

No mention of what is prompting the sonogram, no BIRAD score, nothing.

I’m just wondering if I should be expecting a BIRAD score or or if I’m recommended a sonogram due to breast density.

    What you are asking about would be found in the radiology report, not in the form letters they send you. You would have to request a copy like you request any other medical records.

    I always receive a bi-rads score after my annual diagostic mammos, but yes, it is contained in the report which I tend to receive a few days following the letter. In your case they may be waiting to assign the the score until the ultrasound is conducted.

    This last time, I ended up needing an ultrasound in addition to the mammo and was then told I needed a biopsy by the radiologist. The report was made available to me 4 days later which isn’t bad considering it was easter weekend.

    My sonogram is Tuesday so in a few days I’ll know more. I’m sure any other letter would have come by now
