Chemo starts Monday - Friends want to go out on Saturday

Options

My first chemo session is scheduled for the Monday after Easter. I'm working on Friday, seeing relatives on Easter and that leaves me Saturday. I still have a bunch of tasks to get done before Monday (cleaning, grocery shopping, etc.).

Some very good friends I haven't seen in a long time want to get together on Saturday and spend the day in the City. They want to visit our old college campus, head out on public transit (germ city), go out for a bite to eat at the mall and so forth. It will also be raining the entire day, so not the most pleasant of days.

I would love to get together with them but I feel like I am running out of time to get myself and my home in order before Monday. I have nobody at home to help me. This is a one woman show. I really want to head into Monday as prepared and relaxed as possible.

I'm in a quandary .. go out with friends on Saturday OR stay home and get my tasks done. What would you do?

Personally I would want to spend the time with friends laughing and having fun while I was still up to it. You may have minimal side effects from chemo or it may hit you hard (I've had it both ways). If it hits you hard you're not going to feel up to going out for a few months and you'll regret not doing it while you had the chance, especially since you live alone and it can get lonely going through chemo. Find time to laugh and smile as often as you can. I know the urge is to do the responsible thing, but you can always have groceries delivered and a clean house isn't important in the overall scheme of things (although I do still manage to keep my kitchen and bathrooms spotless when I'm on chemo because germs and a compromised immune system are not a good mix). Or if one of your friends lives close by maybe you can make a deal that you'll go out on Saturday if someone can give you a hand with the grocery shopping and some light cleaning next week.

Whatever you decide, I wish you good results and minimal SEs from chemo, and if you decide to go out with your friends I hope you have a great time!

Can’t you do a shorter day with your friends? A little distracting fun sounds great but I get wanting to feel all set on the home front before Monday.
