Hello,

My name is Alicia, I am 27 years old, Last month I went in for my yearly well woman exam and thought nothing else would happen. My doctor found a lump and sent me in for an Ultrasound and Mam. The imaging center suggested to get a biopsy. I am very nervous and don't know what to expect. Upon my doctor reading about what they found he referred me to a Breast Surgeon. I go in tomorrow and don't know what to expect. I have the results of the test but honestly do not know what anything on the paper means at all. My Maternal grandmother has had cancer twice and my mother had a benign tumor once. Any help would be appreciated.

Alicia

Of course you are nervous! Take a deep breath and then call someone to see if they can go with you to the appointment. It helps to have another set of ears for listening to the doctor. That person can also take notes or record the conversation so you can hear it again later.

I'm sorry you are worried and being young it is even scarier. Having someone with you is a big help. Another set of ears is helpful. It is easy to forget.

Most doctors will also let you have something written down as well so you can have all the knowledge you need.

If it turns out to be cancer this site has a lot of reliable information in there (not just the message boards which offer support). Some sights online are not always up to date or reliable. You can trust what you read here. Best of luck to you.

Hi gassa04, and welcome to Breastcancer.org,

We're so very sorry you're here and worrying. The good news is that you have your young age on your side. Also, keep in mind that in the US about 80% of areas that are biopsied turn out to be benign. (See Breastcancer.org's page on Biopsy.)

We're all thinking of you and sending you positive thoughts. Please keep us posted with what you find out tomorrow!

If you share what the biopsy results were there are many of us who can help interpret it.

Ah—for some reason I thought you had already had the biopsy. It’s a simple procedure and you’ll have your answers when the pathology report is in.

I will share my experience with you of my recent ultrasound guided core needle biopsy.

First, I met my nurse. She is also my coordinator, my contact if I have any questions. She asked me a few questions and wanted to know if I understood the procedure. She also explained my aftercare. I signed a couple pieces of paperwork.

She left the room and I undressed from the waist up. I put on a robe. I was then walked directly across the hall and into the room with the ultrasound equipment. The nurse positioned me on my back and placed a wedge under me. She also prepped the tray for the radiologist. I didn't look at the needle device. I personally handle procedures just fine if don't look.

I was then introduced to the radiologist that was going to perform the procedure and her assistant. We talked briefly. She took a small needle and numbed me. That slightly, very slightly, stung. I was instantly numb. She held the ultrasound wand in one hand and the spring loaded biopsy device (have no idea what the name technically is) in the other. She took three samples. She told me before she took each one. There was an audible clicking noise each time. She then inserted a titanium marker in the biopsy site.

Afterwards she put a steristrip on the tiny wound. She covered that with a large waterproof bandage.

The process was easy and nearly painless.

After that, I was guided into another room. A mammogram was taken to ensure proper placement of the marker. I was still numb so it didn't hurt. I did bleed a little.

OK so today I went to the surgeon they did not do the biopsy he decided that he wanted to do an ultrasound at lead biopsy. But he did let me know that it is pretty large right now about 2.5 cm and kind of growing from last imaging. He said that it to him it does not look like cancer but does look like a fibroadenoma I said that if it is in fact that that I have options whether to take it out or leave it and I’m honestly leaning more towards taking it out because that’s too scary that it could be growing even bigger than it is already.

The findings on US sound predominantly benign. Perhaps a fibroadenoma?

Let us know what the biopsy shows.

hello all! Biopsy is officially back and has been confirmed as an abnormal Fibroadenoma. I am having an extential biopsy (lump removal) later this month on the 23rd to have it taken out of my body since it is growing at a rapid rate. They will biopsy it all again once out. Thank you everyone for the help!
