May have biopsied wrong spot

Hi there! I was given a BI-RADS 4 classifications originally, but when I had my biopsy, the results came back as PASH which is benign. My gynecologist called me to discuss these results and said that the surgeon may decide to do another biopsy because the histological and radiological properties don't align.. what I find ridiculous is that my surgeon, who did the biopsy, never once mentioned a discordance AND completely stood by the PASH diagnosis. I opted for an elective surgery to remove the PASH mass (lumpectomy) and as it turns out, the mass was cancerous!! The surgeon hadn't gathered a large enough sample size or biopsied incorrectly... I'm not sure what the reasoning is behind it. The point is I had one biopsy and it came back benign. There was, in fact, PASH in the mass but there was cancer as well.. Cancer that no one detected until the ELECTIVE surgery. It's wild to me... The reason I'm sharing this with you is because if it's even suggested that something was off with the biopsy or someone on your healthcare team doesn't trust the results, follow up intensely. Demand they do another biopsy or at the very least reassure you 100% that the first biopsy was an accurate representation of the whole mass. I don't wish the trauma I experienced from a poorly perfomed biopsy upon anybody..

Olliebird, it isn’t terribly unusual to get discordant results like you have. Hope you hear what they have decided to do next soon. It is likely you will have another biopsy, perhaps a surgical one, or maybe an MRI if you haven’t had one yet

Olliebird, I don't write very often on this site anymore. However, once I read your post I had to respond. In January 2016 I had a biopsy due to an area of concern on an MRI. I was given the good news that the biopsy was B9 by my oncologist (I had breast cancer before). A few days later, I received a phone call after other radiologists at the facility (a NYC hospital) read the pathology report and looked at the MRI. They said the results were discordant and they wanted to redo the biopsy under MRI as opposed to ultrasound. I was not happy - I was still celebrating the B9 result news. Well, I had the second biopsy and the radiologist took many, many samples. Afterwards she told me she was glad she took so many because it was one of the later samples that turned up the malignancy. Had we stopped at the first biopsy, or even had less samples taken with the second, the cancer would have been missed. It very small (4 mm) and something was showing on that MRI but it was hard to find when doing a biopsy. I don't want to scare you - your results may turn out to be B9. But why chance it? Someone thought the results were discordant so why wait 6 months of agonizing when you can find out right away and potentially catch something at a very early stage. I wish you the best and hope this turns out to be a false alarm.
