Newly diagnosed with some questions

Hi there. I have ILC and was DX on MAR 12. I had a breast MRI yesterday and need to have two places biopsied with MRI guidance and a axillary lymph node looked at via ultrasound and possibly biopsied. Anyone have a lymph node biopsied? It seems they said it looked "thickened" or something similar. What was the outcome? Why do they do that when they will be taking the sentinel node at surgery?

Also, they talk about lymph system, but do they ever tell you if the tumor(s) are vascular? If so, when and how do they know?

I was looking in the mirror last evening and I can see many more veins in my affected breast then the other. Is that normal and why is that?

Thanks!

    Hello!

I did have a lymph node biopsied, it was thickened and the radiologist did not like the way it looked. However it came back clear and I had no positive nodes from surgical pathology either! They look at the lymph node prior to surgery to help guide treatment decisions.

I’m not quite sure about your second question. I do know that prominent veins in a breast with cancer are common. I am not sure of the reason.

Very sorry to hear about your diagnosis. I hope for clear lymph nodes for you and for you to have a clear treatment path very soon. Waiting for all of these answers is so terribly hard!

I had what was thought to be clear nodes when I had my lumpectomy but when the Path report came back it showed a micromet in my SN. My BS was surprised; I was stunned. The Path report is the tell all.

I am doing fine - so far, so good 8 years out this August God willing.,

    Diane

Thank you Wigging2000 and edwards750 for your responses. I am really scared of this ILC but am taking it in stride. I hope next week's biopsies are benign and we only have to worry about the one tumor.

I responded to your other thread regarding imaging but wanted to mention here that, as you may have learned, ILC tends to be multifocal/centric, often with more than one location apparent due to the ability to grow in sheets or by cells lining up in single file. It does not form a tight, palpable lump like IDC. That is why getting clean margins is more difficult and size can seem to vary from mammogram to ultrasound or MRI.

All that to say, don't be surprised if mastectomy becomes an option for you. After surgery pathology will report if lymphovascular invasion is detected. It's good that your wait time until the next set of biopsies is not terribly long!

My ILC was a tight lump, I did have 2 tumors that were discovered to be totally separate the other IDC. The e-cadherin test distinquished the types.
