Hi, I have a question for those who have had their implants removed.. I have had them, silicone, one gummy for over 10 years.. I have hated them from day 1.. Still get Iron Bra feeling, still have pain, still have the feeling they move when I'm sleeping, and I wake up screaming in panic attacks. I cannot ever sleep without a tight sports bra to keep them in place and spare me pain. I want them gone.. I was told I would have drains, etc.. How long of a recovery is it ? That's the only thing holding me back,, not wanting pain and a long recovery.. Will I be out of commision (carrying anything, bending) for more then a few days? Thanks in advance... I want to do it this summer between July 4 and the middle of August.. I would have about 5 to 6 weeks of recovery before my vacation... I don't want to ruin that, lol.

    Hi mittmott,

I had my implants removed about 2 months after they were put in, and it was easy. It was done in surgical center with local anesthesia (I was completely awake), and recovery was about 2 weeks. I still, however, have dancing muscles and iron bra feel, and have been told I will until muscles are repaired when I have DIEP surgery next month.

Not sure if this helps or not since you've had your implants for many years, but wanted to share in case it may help. Also, even though I still have complications, there was a tremendous amount of relief once they were out. The pressure and "toxic" feeling they gave me were gone immediately.

    Good luck!

    Hi Mittmott,

I had my implants removed 2 weeks ago and replaced with a diep flap. I love it already! I had the implants for about 4 years. They started out looking good but in the winter they were always cold and my chest muscles would tighten up. This in turn would cause back problems. I did find some relief with massage but always hated the look and feel of the constricted muscles. To add to that, last year one side started tightening up as I got capsular contracture. I went to a new plastic surgeon who referred me to a doctor who did the diep flap and I decided to do it. My new breast mounds are warm and soft and the muscles are back where they belong! I'm still a bit sore and bruised but I am very happy and know it will continue to get better. The recovery time is 4-6 weeks, just like with the original mastectomy. There will be some follow up work like fat grafting but I won't have any future problems that you can get with implants. You might want to look into it if it's an option for you. I am so happy I did!

Yes, I am considering explant too due to concerns of one short episode recently of internal itching at implant breast when I was overheated, which dissipated within minutes with after taking my warm clothing off and putting cooler clothing on. So I am considering explant to avoid this odd symptom as some women who have had internal breast implant itching have gone onto having ALCL at explant. So this is why I am concerned, though, their itching was more continuous and severe than mine from what I read at ALCL In Women With Breast Implants BIA-ALCL. Yeah, and I am worried that the explant could be painful. And I worry if I should be implanted with new smooth implants or just go flat so as to never have to fact implant explant surgery again since I am older in mid-fifties. Racheal

I just want them out.. I'm not planning anything else. I can't have Diep, I have a very bad back, and was told it will make my back worse. I'm not looking for that kind of surgery anymore anyway.. just want these things out.

I have had severe itching since they were put in. I was told it was nerve damage.. You can scratch and rub forever, it doesn't go away... I'm going to make an appointment with plastic surgeon and schedule the surgery... Just was wondering people's experiences with the removal but without any other kind of reconstruction surgery.

    Hi mittmott,

Most women find implant removal surgery to be pretty easy -- and many who choose to remove their implants because of pain or discomfort experience immediate relief.

I question the assertion that your back pain will be worse. If you have bilateral implants, you may in fact feel better once the weight of the implants is gone. Also, because of the implant pain you currently feel, you may be holding yourself in a tense position without even realizing it, which may be contributing to your back pain.

I urge you to find a plastic surgeon to do the implant removal who is sympathetic, or at least non-judgmental, about your desire to remove them. You want someone who will do everything possible to make sure you feel better once they're removed and who will make sure to remove all extra skin and leave you with a cosmetically-pleasing result.

I considered implants before my bilateral mastectomy but ultimately decided to go breast-free. I haven't regretted it. I know it's not the right choice for everyone, but it was for me. I founded a non-profit website, BreastFree.org, twelve years ago to provide information and support to women living breast-free. In the Personal Stories section of the website, you'll find a couple of stories relevant to your situation: Joan's Story and Susan's Story.

Erica, my back has nothing to do with implants. I have had prior to BC 2 back surgeries and I need a spinal fusion.. I have a very messed up back, and as my dr explained years ago, compromising my abdominal muscles will cripple me.. It's not pain from weight of implants. I wish it was only that. My surgeon is very good and he is sympathetic. He doesn't push anything on me. You were misunderstanding my position... He would not do a DIEP reconstruction on me due to my back issues, and they are very severe back issues, not Oh, my back hurts..He never pushed me into anything, and said he will do whatever I want.I'm just looking for other peoples experience with taking out implants after so many years , as to length of recovery, drains, etc.

Sorry about your back. I wasn't sure whether it was something related to implants or not. And very glad that your surgeon is sympathetic.

I had my IMPlants removed four years ago. I don't regret it for a minute. No more ice boobs, no more contorted muscles and pain. I wear a bra with prosthetic pockets and nobody really knows the difference. The recovery will be easier than the implant recovery. Good luck!

Thank you "A beautiful sunset" .. That's what I wanted to know.. I also wear the fake ones anyway, as the reconstructed ones were never the right size for my shape.. I carry all my weight in belly and needed bigger "foobs" to make my clothing lay right. I was a d cup before the mastectomy.

I also am looking to have my implants removed for all the same reasons as MittMott. I am wondering how my pectorals will recover from being stretched out of position by the implants and how much PT I will need and how long before I can really lift things etc.

I had silicone implants for 10 years. They were put in before I was diagnosed and were over the chest muscles not under. I developed contracture scar tissue pretty early on. After my first tumour I wanted them explanted along with the lumpectomy. I found the explantation surgery more painful than the implantation. But I think that was due to all the scar tissue that had developed over 10 years. The plastic surgeon said they would have ruptured inside me within 6 months if I had not had them removed. One side ruptured in the surgeon's hand as he was getting it out of me. Funny, the plastic surgeon who put them in never mentioned that could happen. I specifically asked how long do implants last? He told me I could expect to go to my grave with them. I was 30 at the time of implantation. Wish I'd never got implants. Should have put that money in the stock market instead!

I'm worried about scar tissue also it's been 10 years. I was told I would need drains.. He said he would have to clean out everything.. I had planned on a certain time to do this, but now I'm reconsidering when I should do it... I'm not sure 5 weeks that I allowed before a vacation will be enough time to leave me pain free enough to wear my fake ones .

I have gummy implants. I love the look (after many fat revisions) and love the 3D tattoo. I never knew implants weren’t a one time surgery that would last forever. Regardless, with everything that is going on regarding textured implantsI want to have them removed. They are under the muscle and have definitely affected sports such as ability to drive a golf ball a decent distance. I am torn on what to do and wonder if anyone is aware of a tattoo that would give the look of a 3D breast. I have searched and found tattoos with designs but it isn’t what I’m looking for. Any suggestions?

I have had my current implants for almost two years. Recently I have been having a lot of illness: anemia that can’t be explained, joint and muscle pain, extreme fatigue. I came across something called breast implant illness N.S. I am wondering if this is what is causing all my symptoms. Has anyone explanted because of BII? I don’t want to beconcave but I will do whatever whatever takes to be healthy

I only received my silicone implants at the end of January, however I am having the same symptoms. I can't go without a bra because they feel heavy and hurt, I can't sleep without a tight bra and when I lay on my side I can feel them move. At times they hurt. I can feel them pressing on my chest wall. I was hoping with time that all of this would get better.

try an anti fungal cream like clortrimazole.

Nerve regeneration is a an annoying itch but the severe itch that makes you want to scratch your breast off responded to antifungal cream. Especially a problem in warm weather or if not wearing a bra and breast lays on chest. That's a perfect storm for fungal growth, warm, moist, dark. May try antifungals like vagisil or other overcounter preparations. Worked for me.

I've scheduled explant surgery en bloc to remove all scar tissue. My foobs look aesthetically fine but they are uncomfortable. You learn to tune out the discomfort and pain (same as Dreya711) but its there. I have to wear a bra 24/7. My pectorals just hate being in this weird position. Any athletic use of arms aggravates them (even putting my arms over my head - and yes, I have tried PT). Winter is so evil because the pecs immediately tighten up because I am wearing these unheated internal "ice packs". I have a light rash on my chest that's been there since the surgery, so I think I am sensitive to the silicone..I think/hope I will be a lot happier with foobs I can take off, then these ones I am stuck with. Would love to hear from folks who did it (and were not particularly sick) how they feel about it now.

I am having mine textured allergen 410 removed because of a rupture. I am not going to implant again. What happens to the capsule. Does it have to be removed as well. Sounds like major surgery if they have to remove the capsule? I don’t see my plastic surgeon for another week and am anxious to know about this.

I very much appreciate this thread. I am having significant tightness in my upper pole area. I have limited range of motion in my shoulders . This impacts my ability to swim and I can't use my arms to do many of the exercises I enjoy.

Myofascial releasee, acupuncture and massage have helped but over and over agin my upper pec muscles contrict. It feels like my implant is always pushed into my arm pit.

Can someone help with a few suggestions? If they remove my implants will they sew my pec muscle back to the correct place and put the DIEP on top of my muscle?

I have had nipple reconstruction do you think I could keep the skin with a DIEP?

Also do you think that having them remove the implant from other ,muscle and replacing it with a DIEP it would improve my range of motion in my arms and shoulders?

Have you ever read of a DIEP deflating and the fat being reabsorbed if the person loses weight?

I am very hesitant to go through a long surgery but I cant keep living with this pain and tightness. It impacts so many areas in my life.

Hi everyone. Have not been here for a very long time. Thought I needed to research what options are the best for me. I've had a latisimus dorsi double mastectomy with implants back in 2007 and the following year reconstruction again for implant replacement due to leakage. They are silicone. I have had so much pain and muscle spasms along the way. I have serious scarring tissue and calcium build up that my foobs don't even look fooby. By everything I have read it seems like my pain would dissipate or minimize. It seems like the muscle on my right side always continues to turn. I can't even bend down comfortably without a spasm.

I plan to see the PS in a couple of weeks. My primary is this week. This is my 3 bout with pneumonia and I feel like the implants are making me sick. Just needed to write this to others that get me. Thanks

    Hi,

I am thinking of removing mine as well. I am tired of pain, muscle spasms and extremely hot flashes, head aches and it seems like we are suppose to think this is normal. I do believe it is not. After discussing this with my husband he is ok with it because he is not a boob man, but really doesn't want me to go through another surgery. I explained to him that I truly believe that my quality of life would improve. What is your personal take on this?

I am consulting with a ps Monday about getting mine removed and fat graft. No more implants for me.

I'm having mine removed too, probably in December, one due to capsular contracture. The other is a small augmentation which I'm also removing. I'm in that Facebook group as well and have multiple symptoms. I don't know if removal will help with those, time will tell, but I know I don't want to fool around with implants anymore. I'm not having repeated exchanges and the PS discouraged it, said a new implant was not a good option for me. He suggested a DIEP flap which I've decided against. He did not however suggest fat grafting. At a consultation with a different PS, that dr said fat grafting was not a very good option as there was nothing for the newly grafted fat to 'grab' on to and that i would be absorbed. Do you believe the physician you're consulting with will do it?

Hi, I am 9 weeks post surgery with BMX and reconstruction with silicone implants and I just want these things out also. I am never comfortable! I don’t know if it’s too soon to make that decision. I posted the question earlier asking for advice and am looking forward to someone answering. I know how you feel
