Lotions and Creams

Options

I will be having radiation after my Lumpectomy. I read the post about different lotions, creams or oils that would work. I wanted some of you ladies that have been down this road have used and works. I want to use something over the counter, if possible. I also thought i read that cool cloths help soothe after radiation also. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

    Hi purplejc5,

I used two products during my radiation treatment-99% pure aloe vera gel and another product called Miaderm.

    Comments about the two:

Aloe vera gel - over the counter, not expensive, easy to find in stores. Not greasy, dried without feeling sticky. I kept it in my refrigerator which made it feel very cool to my skin.

Miaderm - also over the counter, fairly expensive, had to purchase directly from the manufacturer via internet (also found it on Amazon). Creamy, spread nicely, not greasy.

For me, key to using these was to use them often. I applied them nightly after my shower, took one with me and applied it right after my treatment, and a couple more times throughout the day, such as after my workout. You can’t use anything for a couple of hours before your treatment, so plan accordingly.

My skin held up very well, with only a small irritation right at the end of treatment. I kept using them for about another month after my treatment ended.

Also, be very careful to use a high spf sunscreen when you are outside. You can get a reaction if you don’t

Your radiation oncologist may have suggestions for specific products. I discussed with mine and he approved.

    Best wishes with your treatments.

Having been down this road twice I can tell you it doesn't matter so much *what* you use, but that you slather stuff on several times a day. Miaderm is mostly calendula cream, and you can find that on Amazon much cheaper than Miaderm. I also used Aquaphor and Desitin--just would grab whatever was nearest and put some on. If you have any old exercise bras I'd use them. They will likely get stained (permanently) from the markings they'll put on your breasts. I was happy to throw them away when I was done. If you already have some you can use, I'd save the new bras for a treat when you're finished. :-)
