edited March 2019 in Waiting for Test Results

I was so happy to come across this forum while consulting with Dr Google.

I found a massive lump in my breast, phoned to get first appt I could with my doctor. The look on her face when she felt it was very alarming. I went in for a mammogram and ultrasound the next day (she said to call her if I couldn’t get an appointment the next day). The radiologist said she was “very worried” and said I would get a call from the breast clinic for a biopsy.

So now I’m waiting and terrified. Everything I’ve read suggests that the bigger the lump the wore the prognosis and mine is 5cm. The radiologist and technician asked when I first noticed it and now I’m beating myself up for not having noticed it earlier.

So grateful to have found this forum. Reading people’s posts makes me feel so much less alone

hi there. I'm sorry that you find yourself here. Did the radiologist give you a Birad rating after your mammogram? Do you have a copy of the report? Remember, nothing is known until the biopsy report comes back. The waiting is torture.. try your best to focus elsewhwre. You're on the right path. Wishing you all the best.

Hi mumoftwo, and welcome to Breastcancer.org.

We're so very sorry you're here and worrying, but we're really glad you've found us. You're sure to find great support here and some help to ease your mind.

As rrobin said, try to remain positive until you have more answers. Only a biopsy would be able to determine exactly what is going on in your breast. A report from the radiologist could be helpful, so if you've received that, please share the results here. There are many here who can help interpret the report, and hopefully put you at ease.

Regardless with what you find out, please keep us posted -- we're all here for you!

For what it's worth, my oncologist told me that a fast growing tumor also could mean the tumor would be extra responsive to treatment.  Mine was 6cm+ at diagnosis and practically popped up overnight.

But at my appointment last week my oncologist told me he couldn't even find it anymore, even though he knew exactly where to look.  I'm not done with chemo yet, but the treatments so far have shrunk the tumor well past the point where a mastectomy would be necessary (vs a less invasive lumpectomy).  Really - size isn't everything!

Please don't beat yourself up! There's a good chance it emerged very fast, and sometimes it's not so easy to notice changes.

Also take all prognoses with a grain of salt. For one thing, the long term ones are, of necessity, based on people who got diagnosed and treated a long time ago. Treatment has come a long way. For another thing, if it *is* cancer there is still lots more info waiting to come out before you can even know which prognoses charts to look at it that really match your cancer. And finally, statistics just don't mean that much for any individual outcome. People with the smallest lowest grade cancer can end up on the wrong side of the odds and people with the most aggressive advanced cancer can live a very long time.

The waiting part that you're in now is truly excruciating. I hope you get results fast and a fast appointment with an oncologist if they come back malignant. In the mean time, cut yourself as many breaks as you can, do whatever works for you for stress relief, even if it's eating cake and reading romance novels, and hang in there.

Thank you. No, I don’t have a copy of the report from the radiologist. It was sent to my family doctor. I have no idea what it said, just that they were worried and required a biopsy.

Thanks for the comforting words everyone, and for the info kber. I’ve been pretty freaked out by the size and how obvious it is (I can see the difference when I look in the mirror). It’s nice to know that bigger doesn’t autmatically mean worse.

Thanks Salamandra. That is so helpful.

It was so hard trying to keep it together in front of my kids yesterday. It is the not knowing that’s the worst. I think I’ll feel better once I have some more information

I had a pea or lima bean sized lump and didn't notice because it was in the upper outer quadrant - an area I never "touched" myself or grabbed. I assumed it was hormonal changes. A doctor found it during an exam. I only had DCIS.....

mumoftwo, please don't beat yourself up - you got a doctor's appointment as soon as you noticed the lump and that's as much as anyone could do. Please be kind to yourself, as you would to a friend who was going through what you're going through.

I am so grateful for everyone on here.

I got a phone call this morning. My biopsy is scheduled for Tuesday morning. Thankfully I was at work today and it made the day go quickly. I also spoke with a colleague who’s been there. This waiting is excruciating.

mum, so happy you have a biopsy date. Tuesday will be here before you know it. Make sure to grab a copy of that report though... it’s rightfully yours to keep.
