De Quervains (Tendonitis of the Thumbs)
Hi:
Is anyone dealing with this issue? This started to occur about four months after chemo/radiation ended. I think it was from the Armidex that I took for two years. What are your thoughts? How are you dealing with this? I find that my chiropractor helps me. The primary care doc wanted to send me to a hand surgeon, and it was then I made the choice to go my chiropractor. It is much better, but I still struggle with pain in washing my hair, and cutting food items with a knife. I can write with a pencil and pen longer than I used to, and cut with a scissors a little more. I am most thankful for these improvements.

I had De Quervains in my left wrist and trigger thumb on the right. The orthopedic surgeon injected them and I have not had a problem since. He said about 50% of his patients come back for a second injection and about 50% of those end up having surgery. But surgery is not the first step usually.

I go to an orthopedic hand surgeon who treats me for DeQuervains and trigger thumb in both thumbs. The left thumb started before cancer treatment so I don't think is a side effect. He does cortisone injections. My left thumb can now go a year w/o causing any problems so we're not going to move ahead with surgery. I expect my right thumb will do the same after getting injections approximately every 3 months for awhile.

I just had surgery for this. I started a thread in the hormone therapy thread.

I actually read a study that showed that Arimidex patient have much higher risk of hand problems than Tamoxifen users but they also do have hand issues. I will try to find the link.
When I went off Arimidex my De Quervains hand improved but did not completely go away. I also tried physical therapy and cortisone shots. The pain would leave and come back. I did email and pm other breast cancer patients and ask what their experience was. In some cases the symptoms did clear up on their own. In many cases they did have surgery and continue Arimidex or Femara. In some instances they discontinued AI and tried Tamoxifen.

I've had problems with trigger thumbs and near trigger fingers. I had a cortisone shot in my right thumb and a year later had surgery on the same hand. This was at years 2-3 after 6 months on arimidex and the rest on exemestane. I still have flares, but I think I went through a wave of SEs at that time that included rheumatoid-like arthritic joint pain and swelling. This has all settled down in years 3 - 4.75. I'm almost done with the 5 years and my SEs are very mild, not unlike a normal non-BC very healthy woman at 60.
Why has this all gotten better? Not an alleviation of stress, my job is worse now. I now take a calcium pill with magnesium and zinc, as well as flax seed oil for my eyes. I've also reduced gluten intake to almost zero. (I discovered I now have a wheat allergy and almost everything with gluten has wheat in it.) This has mellowed SEs remarkably.

After about 8 mos on exemestane developed severe De Quervain's in rt wrist according to MRI results. Ice, ibuprofen, splint and TENS provide temporary relief. Dr.Google says this may resolve on its own. Anyone had that happen or am I going to have to get a cortisone shot?Hate going off AI for awhile as an option, but the pain is affecting QOL.

i had an injection for it two months ago and then two weeks later had a second injection in my thumb joint for arthritis. The pain from the de Quervains resolved, but I still have some pain in the thumb joint. I went to a hand therapist and she made me a molded splint for general work and the results are amazing. I push the shopping cart with the splint plus haul my shopping bags with it on. I also use it while driving. What a positive difference.
My daughter had it as well andunfortunately, after two shots in each wrist ended up needing surgery. She is thrilled with the results. She had struggled with it for several months following the birth of her first born to the point she could not hold the baby. She had the first surgery when the baby was three months old and the second surgery two weeks later. She recently had a second baby and I asked her how she was feeling. Cradling her newborn, she looked at me and said she couldn’t imagine how she would have been doing had she not had the surgery....

I thought I had de Quervain but X-Ray showed that it's osteoarthritis of the base of the thumb. Worse on the right (dominant) hand. AIs for me triggered rapidly advancing osteoarthritis, worst of it is cervical spine. Make sure it's not that. It gives you lots of pain and problems with pinching and grasping - buttoning a blouse, sewing, writing, etc. Heck, I have days when I can't trust my right hand to lift the coffee cup to my face.

Was on Letrozole for three years and Aromasin for one year and just had de Quervain surgery on Tuesday.

I just found this thread and wow....I'm pretty sure I had this last year in my right hand and it didn't occur to me that could be related to cancer treatment. Mine eventually went away on its own though, thank goodness.

I had it in my left hand. i am on tamoxifen. i don't think it was a side effect, more likely from me starting to lift weights and using my left hand far more than usual. I needed surgery and haven't looked back since.

I am about to have a hand X-ray tomorrow and start seeing a hand specialist due to this exact diagnosis of my right thumb.
I’m almost 42 and been on hormonales for 2 years now. Thumb issue did not start until about 6 months on the meds. Actually seems to have gone through some phases: first really felt like I had carpal tunnel and then pain from tip of thumb to wrist and then that calmed down and now I have a very inflamed base thumb joint and my thumb is stuck in a bent position a lot of the time. Sometimes feels like a basketball jam.
Curious to see if the hand therapy helps and also curious to see this X-ray

I'm hr neg and developed thumb tendonitis out of the blue several months after finishing treatments. My acupuncturist was able to treat it quickly and effectively--symptoms went to zero after just a few acupuncture visits.
