Help interpreting vague results.
Hi all. I am a 36 yr old mom of 4 boys. I've had mammos and US for the past 3 yrs, they were monitoring some sites.
My last mammo showed developing asymmetry at middle depth 6oclock right breast.
The ultrasound said there is a heterogenous lesion at 6 oclock, 3mm from the nipple, that measures 9mm, corresponding to the developing asymmetry on the mammo.
BIRADS 4 on both
These tests were done late thurs, and I'm having a biopsy tomorrow. The radiologist suggested I contact a breast surgeon. I sent over these reports, and the surgeons office said they want biopsy preliminaries right away bc they want to get me in this week.
Obviously, I was blown away by this. I would rather be over prepared and not caught off guard. Has anyone had these findings on their reports?

Dear Jacquie729,
Welcome to the BCO community. We are sorry that these changes have brought you here but glad that you reached out to our members. While you are waiting for some replies check out this page with links to information about common imaging questions. Good luck tomorrow and keep us posted on what you learn. We are happy you found us and hope that this finding turns out to be benign.

It is pretty strange that they said you need to contact a breast surgeon before the results are in or the biopsy has even taken place. Try to ask them some more questions tomorrow during the biopsy. Or maybe they'll have a little meeting with you beforehand. Mine did and I saw the mammogram on the screen and reality started sinking in further. See if you can read a more detailed report. BIRADS 4 is any suspicion that needs to be biopsied, so it is probably the largest range of results than any other BIRADS, I would guess. I am not sure what your lesion/asymmetry might point to, hopefully someone else might chime in. There are other benign breast conditions that they encourage women to remove as well. BUT try not to stress out.... hopefully you get more information tomorrow. Uncertainty is the worst. Biopsy stress is hell! Hang in there.

do you have a more detailed report in your patient portal maybe? This is really too vague to know why they are already referring you to a surgeon. There are no descriptors of the lesion itself besides size so there's no way to know from what you've written what characteristics they're seeing.

Thanks all. When I spoke with the first radiologist, I was so blindsided, so the only question I asked was, could this mean breast cancer, to which he answered yes. Then I spoke to the head radiologist who is doing the biopsy and I was just trying to hold it together. He told me that they promise to take good care of me because my boys need me.
I had my husband go pick up the report, and that's all they gave. So frustrating seeing how detailed some other reports are.

Hugs to you, Jacquie!
When my mammogram in December 2017 showed an architectural distortion I was recommended for a biopsy. It was recommended that I contact the breast surgeon right away, even before the biopsy. My OB was the one who had sent in the orders for me to have the mammogram, but I felt much better following up with the surgeon even before anything happened.
Best of luck to you!
