CEA of 11

Options

MO called this morning. Tumor markers are high. CA27-29 was 31 6 months ago, now 67 and CEA was 1.1 and is now 11. Can you say "freaking out"? I have been under a lot of stress and depression these last two years with job loss. I finally found a job 5 months ago that I love and my daughter just found out yesterday she was accepted into a Clinical Health Psychology PhD program (she wants to council cancer patients and research the effects on their caregivers and PTSD). Could it be that the stress level drops and the cancer comes back? Seems like that is what happened to me the last time.

Are they going to do a follow up scan of some sort? Tumor markers can be unreliable in many people.

So sorry you have this stress. As Karen said, tumor markers are not considered reliable, and are not standard of care. My MO doesn’t do them at all. Please try not to worry, and wait for results of more definitive tests. Do you have a scan scheduled? When you get the all-clear, ask if the marker tests are necessary. Good luck

His office is working on getting the scans approved. I like having the tumor marker tests done and have had them done for 6 years and they remain pretty consistent. Once that has certainly stayed consistent is the CEA test. The highest it has ever gone is 4. He never gets concerned about them, this is the first time he has.
