Hi, I just went in for a mammogram and ultrasound because I found a lump on my left outer breast close to my armpit. After the ultrasound my doctor told me I had cancer and wanted to biopsy my tumor and lymph nodes under the armpit. Is this normal to do a lymph node biopsy? Still waiting for results. I’m so scared.

hi there! I'm pretty useless here since I don't know. But, I'm praying for you and hoping someone with knowledge will answer.

imgoingtofight, stay strong, girl! It’s a scary time for you, I know. I’ve been diagnosed a year ago, and this has been a very difficult year. Waiting is the worst. You’ll feel better once you have a treatment plan. Try to distract yourself. Ask for Ativan, it’ll take the edge off. This site is great for support and info. Biopsy of everything suspicious is normal at this stage. You’re not alone!

if your lymph nodes were swollen they might want to grab a sample to see if it has already spread there, vs. waiting for MRI imaging and then surgery results. Right now it's all about collecting information. I'm surprised they already told you it was cancer vs. letting you wait to know, even if they are certain (BIRADS 5). I'd think they'd wait until after your biopsy. Did they already do the biopsy? I hope you get results soon to easy your mind. Even knowing bad news can be easier than excruciating drawn out uncertainty.

yes it's normal in a situation like yours. If they are swollen or atypical and there's a suspicious lump (or known tumor) in the breast they will biopsy the nearest lymph node as well. This is to see if the cancer has spread to the nodes which would affect staging as well as a treatment plan.
