    To me a lush carpet
of pine needles or spongy grass
is more welcome than the most luxurious Persian rug.

    There are times when
    I cannot believe
I am separate from this earth
    when I could swear
    the wind blows through me
    as it does the woven
needles of the pine tree by the creek

when I feel my feet planted
deep in the earth with the roots of trees and wildflowers,
    drawing essence."

it would be in a garden at the cool of the day.

    The violets
in the mountains have broken the rocks.
    ~Tennessee Williams

    image

I wandered lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
    A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze
Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
    They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay:
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.
    ~William Wordsworth, "I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud," 1804

    Every gardener knows
that under the cloak of winter
    lies a miracle ...

    a seed waiting to sprout,
a bulb opening to the light,
    a bud straining to unfurl.
And the anticipation nurtures our dream.
    - Barbara Winkler

    Blossom of Love
    By James Dillet Freeman

    There is a golden flower
    Most beautiful to see;
    It is the gentle blooming
Of love in you and me.

    There is a golden flame
    Whose warmth is felt nowhere,
    Save in the outstretched heart
That turns to God in prayer.

    There is a golden thought
    As shining as the sun;
    It is the understanding
That God and you are one

    Plant your own garden
    and decorate your own soul,
instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.”

    ~ Veronica A. Shoffstal

    If the sight
of the blue skies fills you with joy

    if a blade of grass
    springing up in the fields
    has power to move you

if the simple things of nature
have a message that you understand,
rejoice, for your soul is alive...

    All through the long winter,
    I dream of my garden

On the first day of spring,
I dig my fingers deep into the soft earth

I can feel its energy, and my spirits soar~Helen Hayes

    The best things in life
    are nearest:

    Breath in your nostrils,
    light in your eyes,
    flowers at your feet,
    duties at your hand,
the path of right just before you

    Look at us,
    said the violets
    blooming at her feet,
    all last winter
we slept in the seeming death
but at the right time God awakened us,
    and here we are
to comfort you. ~Edward Payson Rod

    is one thing

    and the first spring day

    The difference between them

    Inscription on Gate
    "Pause friend and read
    before you enter here

    image
    This vine clad wall
    encloses Holy ground

    Herein a mellowed garden dreams
    away the years

    Steeped in serene,
    sweet light, and muted sound

    Herein tranquility
    and peace abide

    For God walks here
    at cool of evening tide

    Pause friend,
and strip from out your heart,
all vanity, all bitterness, all hate

    Quench for this hour
    the fever of your fears

    Then, treading softly,
    pass within this gate

There, where the ancient trees wait,
    hushed and dim,

    May you find God
and walk a while with Him."

    Gardening is
    about enjoying the smell
of things growing in the soil,

    getting dirty
    without feeling guilty,
    and generally taking the time
to soak up a little peace and serenity. ~Lindley Karsten

    After a few hours
of sweating with dirt all over me
    and insects buzzing around
the upper half of my body,

I may begin to get a sense of being
    in tune with nature

    It's at these moments
where I take note of a worm that is maneuvering
its way out of the dirt or a butterfly that silently lands on a bush next to me

    With
    subtlety and a total lack
    of self consciousness,
I come out of myself, look around,
    marvel at the majesty
    of what I am experiencing
and begin to take note that I
    have entered some type
    of altered state of consciousness.
    - Fran Sorin
