Is It Breast Cancer Mets on my Lung or Small Cell?
I cant sleep, eat, or think. My thoughts are all over the place. I'm trying to act like theres nothing wrong invfront of my kids. After my lumpectomy I thought I was good no cancer cells in 9 removed lymph nodes. A year later I'm going for a biopsy on Thursday because a CT scan shows a mass the size of a nickle on my lung near the bronchial tubes. I'm afraid its breast cancer metastatic but terrified its small cell lung cancer. I thought they could tell by the way it looks what type of cancer it is. I'm so anger and afraid the waiting is the worst. I do things without realizing I did them. I keep thinking why I'm suppose to grow old with my husband I want to see my kids get married and have grand babies. This is pure HELL.

I am so sorry you are going through this--I have only this to offer- a2-3 years ago they found a nodule on my lung-- they told me at the time that these things are very common---- turned out, after 6 months of surveillance, it disappeared-which is also common. Hopefully this is what will happen to you....

Me too Pippy. They found multiple lung nodules when I went to the clinic for an unrelated issue. I was tested for pneumonia which was negative so the PA ordered the chest X-ray. The tech was a moron. She asked me if I had an underwire bra on because the Xray didn’t look right? Then she had to run the xrays several times. The PA saw a lot of lung nodules and was concerned although she said it could be scar tissue. I had had 33 radiation treatments. She told me I needed to go to the cancer clinic wherever I had my treatments like ASAP. I told her I would wait for the Radiologist’s report. She said he would agree with her. He didn’t. No evidence of any lung issues. Very detailed report. Normal chest X-ray.
So it could very well be lung nodules which is very common and the vast majority are benign.
We perfectly understand your fear unfortunately it comes with the territory when you get DX with BC or any cancer for that matter. I guess the fear factor never goes away. I’m 7 years out last August and I still get scared right around my annual mammogram appointment.
Try not to worry and keep us posted.

Thanks Diane
For some reason I'm thinking the worst. My oncologist isn't saying its mets or what she thinks she knows there is something that need to be biopsy. I'm pretty sure she suspects mets. She did say that there are a lot of treatment now . So that just leads me to believe she thinks its breast cancer mets Just not ready for this.

what was your original diagnosis? How big was your tumor? Grade? Stage? Oncotype? A year after a lumpectomy seems too soon for mets.
-
One of my oldest and closest friends was diagnosed w/ NSCLC stage 4 de novo, and she got on a biologic agent that had been approved mere weeks before, and is NED 4 years later. So, as others have said, there is a chance it's nothing, but if it's something, there are also incredible things happening with treatment. Try not to get ahead of yourself (easier said than done). (((hugs)))

I'm sorry you are being tormented by this. But the first question is are, or were, you a smoker.
-
Pippy - was the CT scan scheduled routine? I never had one before or during my while BC process.
Although lung cancer can be advanced before it’s discovered there are usually some symptoms like a persistent cough not due to a cold or allergy, unexplained loss of weight or spitting up blood, etc. I remember losing a lot of weight before I was DX with BC and I thought it was because I had cut out sugar. It was a symptom of my cancer.
A friend had a persistent cough and constant fatigue. Not a smoker and never been oneand constantly worked out. Great shape. Her DX was lung cancer. Just saying she had symptoms. I realize not everyone does.
We are praying for you. Keep the faith and keep us posted.

What difference does it make if Pippy is or was a smoker. Are you blaming her, the victim, for getting cancer?? There are many non-smokers who get lung cancer and there are many smokers who do not. We are not the cause of ours illnesses.
-
I think maybe she was trying to narrow down between 'BC mets' vs a new/unrelated cancer in the lung.

Pippy, an MRI of my sacrum confirmed metastatic BC to the bone. I had every symptom of it even to partial paralysis. They rushed me to a pet/ct scan from the cap of skull to mid thigh which showed multiple nodules in both lungs with absolutely no symptoms. They were small. Oncologist said she wasn't sure if it was cancer but if it was BC the treatment would treat the whole body. If it wasn't they may disappear or remain the same. Two of my nodules have disappeared in treatment and the others continue to decrease. Please try to wait for your test and don't go to small cell. That is a different animal. We could all have multiple kinds of cancer but we need to focus on beating the one we know we have. Hang in there; the women here stand shoulder to shoulder with you. Hugs and Peace to your mind and heart. Jo

That’s true Pessa. I know ones who smoked and got lung cancer and ones who didn’t and got lung cancer as I mentioned in my post above. I hate the implied/obvious blame game too. Sure smoking is a big contributor but so many unfortunate people including us get DX with cancer and don’t “deserve” it. I have also heard so many women say why me? They lived the proverbial healthy lifestyle. What’s the point if they still end up with the C word? No cancer in their family either.
The thing is doctors are at a loss to explain why we drew the unlucky card. My sister and I have BC. Our mother had it. Connect the genetic dots. My MO, however, said 70% of BC cases are not genetically driven. Hard to believe.
Regardless Pippy is scared and understandably so. No one wants to go there” certain it’s metastatic but that’s virtually impossible to do once you are branded with the C word.
My sister had lung nodules too and she never smoked just for the record. The bizarre thing is in my neck of the woods the doctors said a bird virus has caused lung nodules to show up on all kinds of people because of this virus. Brother included and he didn’t smoke either.
Good luck Pippy. We are right there with you.

Thank you for everyone kind words and encouragement. I'm a walking zombie. I own my own business and I'm alone all day.. I talk to my sister and Husband but coming on here makes me feel better. To answer the smoking question I am not a smoker I did years ago but never a true smoker. I'm thinking of call my doctor for something to help this anxiety. When I go shopping I now look at people differently. Who know there might be someone going through the same as me. I want my boring everyday life back. My doctor took me off Tamoxifen and is putting me on letrozole she said to stop for ten days before I start it. Now I feel like a sitting duck taking nothing, and wow this was the 6 th night off Tamoxifen and my hot flashes are now waking me up. that weird. If this is Mets can someone please tell me my life will get back to normal and I will stop thinking of death. I use to watch what I eat but now I could careless. I'm so mad I ate a chocolate bar if i ever get my appetite back I'm getting a pizza. There just so many things that I have to think of. I have this awful feeling my life is going to change and I can't stop it. Thank you listening again

Oh Pippy bless your heart. You are going to make yourself sick worrying. I wish we had the answers. I think getting something for your anxiety is a good idea. I am the poster person for worrying so I can emphasize with what you are going through.
If it turns out to be the worst case scenario there are a lot of women on this website living multiple years with mets. One of the ladies in my church group found out a few years ago her BC had metastasized to her hip. She is doing really well. Being Stage IV does hang over her head but it doesn’t consume her now. She goes on cruises and is very active. She found out it had metastasized when her tumor marker numbers kept climbing. She did have a very aggressive cancer to begin with.
I hope you get your test results quickly.

Pippy, I hope you get clarity soon. I think life does get back to normal the minute we know what we need to do and where we are. It's the unknown that is so frightening. I am sorry you find yourself in this situation. I think a chocolate/ pizza approach through the next few days is perfectly warranted if it gives you a little bit of comfort, and/or an ativan approach. It's okay to be scared and upset, I am sure you will handle whatever comes along as you have handled things thus far. I am glad you have your sister and husband to support you. We are here too!!
