Thank you thank you thank you thank you
PS TwoHobbies - I think the Parisian lifestyle is the way to go! I guess I get some of that walking the pups, especially on weekends when we take longer walks.
PPS - where / how is Egads? Vamps do you know? Egads if you’re still reading this just no time to write we miss you and hope you’re doing OK!
Almond butter cookies fresh from the oven!

Well Hello to everyone!
I know it's been a very long time since I have posted, but I have had a lot to deal with. Between dealing with the new oral Chemo (Kisqali) SE's, etc. and daily life, I just haven't had the mental energy to get on the computer. At times my email is days behind, plus I haven't even checked FB but a couple times either. Also, my Mother died a few weeks ago which has been an emotional ride, despite the fact that we spent most of my adult life estranged. It has ranged between shock to relief. If you are fortunate enough to have a good relationship with your parents you may not understand this.
On the postive side I had a PET scan in early January and all is clear at this point. Yay, to that! Apparently I am in remission at this time. Unusual I guess for stage 4 cancer. I am grateful for it.
I think I finally got the Kisqali fatigue and other SE's figured out. Instead of taking it in the morning like the patient packet says I started taking it before bed and I have not been needing to take naps in the afternoons. Yay! I am addressing the constipation issue with 20-40 oz. of water a day, plus probiotics and fiber. Seems to be working. The only issue we are trying figure out now is the dosing. My ANC (Absolute Neutrophil Count) has been seriously low. December it fell to 0.71, so I was off of it for 3 weeks, then this month it fell to 0.83 on the lower dose (400 mg). So now it is on hold again and I am going for bloodwork this afternoon to check my count. The MO suggested I get an injection of an immune booster (Granix), but I declined since it caused me severe pain in my skull base and pelvis the last time I had it. So I guess I'll be going to the lowest Kisqali dose of 200 mg. now.
Also, in January I received my first dose of Zometa. It is a bone strengthener that is infused at the MO's office. They told me I would likely experience mild flu-like symptoms. WRONG!!! I had the dose on Wednesday afternoon and by Thursday morning I had serious pain in my lumbar spine and then my my joints and muscles, then by evening my ribs hurt so bad that I was taking pain meds about every 3 hours. I also had a fever that ranged from 99.5 to 101.0. These SE's lasted 2.5 days, and then it was like a switch was turned off and I went and did 6 loads of laundry that Saturday evening. So weird. However, I doubt that was a mild flu-like response. Fortunately I only have to have that drug every 3 mos. and I've been told that the SE's should lessen with the next dose. We'll see.
I have also been trying physical therapy to try and strengthen my torso muscles to help me not slump when I sit or stand, however the PT seems to be causing me more pain than it is alleviating. I will be talking with the PT next week about whether I should discontinue the therapy.
I did not do any baking for the holidays other than a cheesecake to take to my friends for Christmas dinner. I also made a bartering deal with my PT for some pulled pork he smokes on his BBQ in exchange for 2 cheesecakes. The standing for the time it took to mix the batters and wash the dishes caused me so much spine and pelvis pain that I was awake until 4 a.m. before the meds gave me relief, so now I am getting fitted for a brace to wear when I am in the kitchen to see if this is helpful. I have pretty much been living on sandwiches, soup or cereal because they are quick and easy to fix, although definitely not healthy.
Now I have to admit that I have not gone back and read all of the posts I have missed, but will try to later so I can catch up on what everyone else is up to, then I can post again.
Egads - Thanks for remembering my B-day and posting the memes. They are so adorable. Based on the dog theme it appears you have my number! LOL!
How are you doing and how is your DH doing? Is his ankle healed?
To the ladies who have posted pics of their adorable furbabies, I so enjoy seeing your pics.
Here is a pic. of my Kirbster at the MO's office last Wednesday. Another patient came in wearing a headband with pink hearts on it and had a bag of them, so she shared one with me, so I had to put it on Kirbs and take a pic. He wasn't very impressed, but survived.
Have a good afternoon and I'll BBL.
-
Pebbles, your cookies look delicious! Last time I made them I added a Tbsp of flax, pretty tasty!
As for Egads, she is busy with the cavedude. She has tried a few times to get on here to catch up and post, but unfortunately it hasn't panned out. Hopefully she will find her way back to us soon!
Junie so nice to see you posting and what wonderful news that you are in remission! I am sooooo very happy to hear this. I am sorry to hear about your mom and I can understand as I am a bit estranged from my mom and my oldest brother. Unfortunately they are toxic to me and being around them does nothing for my anxiety and depression. Kirbster looks about as happy as Stella when my boys and I put things on Stella and taking pictures. lol, it is for our amusement!
I went for my CT last night, had to drink some yucky water that I didn't realize I had to do, so of course I had a coffee before going in, there was not a lot of room in my belly for all that water too. lol Hoping we will have the results at my doctor's appointment on Monday, but I am not holding my breath.
How is everyone doing?
My neck is getting better, so much so that my PT says we may drop to once a week treatments next week to see how it goes! Yay! Junie when I first started PT I was in more pain with the treatments and then all of a sudden I started to feel great, but it took quite a few treatments for that to happen. Like you now I want to strengthen the muscles for better posture and prevent future damage.
Have a good night all.

-
Oh GG27 sending you lots of good vibes and well wishes for a easy, successful surgery on Friday. Cyber hugs coming your way girl. Will be thinking of you. xxx
-
GG, good luck! Cyber hugs...
-
GG27 sending you good healing thoughts esp for your upcoming surgery on Friday!
JunieB - so good to hear from you and HUGE CONGRATS for being in remission!! That is amazing news and so happy for you and hope it continues forward. And love the puppy pic!
Vamps - thanks, I want to bake more tomorrow for my sis who is visiting this weekend and will try adding the flaxseed!
Inna - waving hi!
Egads - hope you’re keeping your head above water and cave dude is recovering.
Cute dog pic for the day - here are Domino and Tucker helping me work out!
-
All the sweet puppies are so cute. Junie so glad to see ya and congrats on remission. Woo-hoo that is good news. Vamp glad you are starting to see results from the PT. GG I hope all went well with your surgery and appointments.
I promised myself I will have a clean day today to get back on track. Someone brought me a non-Paleo cookie yesterday and I ate it. Luckily there was only one.
Egads, Ihope DH is healing up. We look forward to your return.
-
Two Hobbies, yesterday was "cheat" day for the family. My husband gets so excited for this day, lol. He doesn't eat half as well as the kids and I, but still gets very excited. So it's back on track again today. Time to get a meal plan done up for the week and grocery list made!
Hope all are well.
Cheryl

It is stories like this that make me want to put my feet up, pour a nice big glass of red wine and eat cheese for my remaining days.
Kaylajane shared it in a new thread.
-
Hi all,
Had my surgery for vitreous hemorrhage a week ago. It's hard to not bend or lift anything, especially for me. But I'm starting to see a bit better every day, though the gas bubble that they put in is getting annoying.
Because I haven't been doing anything for a week, I can feel a couple of pounds creeping in, so I'm going to try to get back to proper paleo again. I had let my diet slide a little bit, allowing myself some homemade pasta, half a baked potato or some bread once in a while.
I hope our faithful leader will be back soon, I need her to crack the whip. (no guilt tho for taking care of her family)
cheers, dee
-
GG27, good to hear you’re feeling better!
Pi-Xi, thanks for the article! What a great story.
-
Glad you liked it, InnaB!
It made me feel like no matter what I do, cancer will do whatever it wants. Thankfully, there are some perks to this lifestyle that keep me from stuffing myself with cheese. 😊
-
Amazing article, 36 and an Olympic gold medalist and bc still happens. But she's a fighter which is the inspiration!
I may need Egads back to crack the whip again too! My husband's homemade loaves of bread and my newly discovered awesome almond butter cookie recipe have totally gotten me back on carbs and my awesome weight loss from before has complete plateaued as a result. Slow and steady, or maybe I just need to be more disciplined again!
Either way, when I'm eating the yummy sandwich, Domino and Tucker are most interested:

Hello ladies! I thought while we wait for our lovely Egads to return I would do a FOODIE FRIDAY post. My husband and I went to a vegan pasta class - OK yes I know this is the paleo thread! - we chose this to learn how to make pasta without dairy and butter. Doesn’t mean we can’t add chicken and shrimp and other meat to it later!
Anyways it was pretty fabulous and we learned some great recipes for things like Herbed Cashew Cheese and Avocado Mousse. Sharing recipes and pics below!
Herbed Cashew Cheese
2 cups raw cashews, soaked for 4 hours or over night
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
Water, just enough to blend the cashews, start with ¼ cup and go from there
2 tablespoons nutritional yeast
1 teaspoon onion granules
Good pinch of salt
1.5 tablespoon shallots, minced
1 tablespoon green onions or chives, chopped
3 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh basil, chopped (you can use any fresh herb you have on hand!)
Drain cashews and rinse well. Place cashews in food processor along with water and lemon juice. Blend until you reach a really smooth consistency. Add additional water in small increments if need. The goal is to have a thick, creamy, spreadable cheese.
Scrape the cheese into a mixing bowl. Add the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine. Taste and adjust seasoning if need. You can use any spices and herbs you like to make different varieties of this tasty spreadable cashew cheese.
To build the bruschetta spread about a tablespoon of cheese on your crostini. Top with a tablespoon of marinated tomatoes. Continue this process with each crostini. Enjoy as an appetizer or with other tapas.
Cacio e Peppe (This recipe alots for cooking all the dough, if you wish to make less, just half the recipe. Half of the dough will make 3-4 servings and the entire dough will make 6-7 servings.)
Fresh Dairy and Egg Free Pasta
Fist, follow the links above to make the fresh pasta and vegan parmesan cheese.Let the dough rest in the fridge overnight. If you will not use it in the next couple days, place in freezer. To defrost, let sit on the counter for a few hours, or in the fridge overnight.
Next, cut the dough into quarters. Roll each quarter as we learned in class and cut it into spaghetti or fettuccini noodles.
Next follow this link to make the rest of the pasta.
Serve on plates or in pasta bowls. Garnish with more fresh pepper, parmesan cheese and parsley. Enjoy!
Avocado Mousse
First make date paste. Soak ½ cup dates in 1 cup water for 1 hour in the fridge. Transfer to a blender and process until smooth. Save any extra in the fridge.
¾ cup cocoa or cacao powder
4 very ripe avocados
½ cup date paste
¼ cup maple syrup (you can use any liquid sweetener or more date paste)
1 teaspoon vanilla
¼ teaspoon sea salt
¼ cup any unsweetened non-dairy milk
Fresh berries (for garnish)
Cacao nibs (optional, for garnish)
Toasted walnuts (optional, for garnish)
Place the cocoa or cacao powder into the bowl of the food processor with the metal blade. Add the avocados, date paste, sweetener, vanilla, salt and blend. Add the milk and continue to process until smooth. Scrape the sides, and process again. You should not see any green color from the avocado, everything should be brown. Do not over mix as this can change the taste of the avocados. Chill for 30 minutes or more. Serve in small dessert bowls and garnish with fresh berries and cacao nibs.

Pebbles! That all looks so delightful!

The cave sure is quiet ... anyone around?
We've been traveling a lot (it's nice to get away from the cold) but I do manage to keep up with most of what's happening here. I assume Egads is still on nursing/business CEO duty? Sure hope she's taking care of herself and that her cavedude is healing well.
Junie, so sorry to hear you lost your mother. I can understand the mixed feelings; my sister and I have been estranged for years (she basically informed me that she was too busy to keep in touch after letting me know - in a Christmas card! - that our youngest brother had died) and I imagine I would have conflicting emotions if I lost her. Families can be so complicated. But the cavechicks are here for you and right now we're celebrating your remission with cyber champagne (and dog treats for Kirby!). Here's hoping you stay that way forever.
Ksusan, how is your El Camino walk coming? I abandoned my idea of swimming the English Channel (the scenery was less than inspiring) and have decided to see how many elephants I can lift instead. Anything to keep exercise interesting, right? Are you still following the Mediterranean Diet? How's that going for you?
Pebbles, how are Domino and Tucker? I love the pics you post of them ... Domino looks too perfect to be a real dog - what a cutie! I also love your dance-a-thon workouts; what a great idea. Almond butter cookies are the perfect reward for those workouts! (Thanks for the recipe, Vamp.)
GG, OMG those desserts you posted upthread look amazing. I seriously want that chocolate torte with salted caramel sauce!!! But I'm guessing it's not remotely paleo. How is your eye? Hope you've totally recovered from your surgery.
Sorry, Vamp, but imitation vanilla is not a good substitute for the real thing. But you're right about the cost of vanilla - it's crazy right now! How did your abdominal/pelvic CT turn out? Stick with PT if you can; it can do wonderful things for you. I've had better luck with PT than with meds in serveral situation over the years. And PS, thanks for keeping this thread active in Egads's absence.
TwoH, how did your blood work turn out? How are you doing?
Nice to see you back in the cave, Pi-Xi. Hope all is well with you, too.
This isn't Two Cent Tuesday material but I would like to throw something out for discussion. What is your favorite pre-made Paleo product? Costco has added a lot of new paleo-friendly items and it's sure appealing to be able to buy something that would take me hours to make. I bought paleo granola there last week and it is awesome! I'd love recommendations if anyone has any.
Since tomorrow is Workout Wednesday, I’ll see you at the gym!
-
Thanks for thinking of me, JKL! I’m doing fairly well and my weight has stabilized at a healthier number. I’m afraid to admit I feel pretty good right now lest I be stricken down. I’m in the middle of the Insanity MAX:30 workout program and I am enjoying pushing myself hard. DH is still cooking up a storm and I’m on holidays for a couple weeks. Dare I say life is good?
-
JKL thanks so much for reviving our thread (and Pi-Xi) for chiming in and keeping our little paleo community going!
Domino and Tucker are doing great. Domino came with me to my radiation follow up appointment and did her “Domino effect” bringing smiles to people at the hospital. Because - this cuteness...
Tucker is loving today because I had a morning conference which means I was back working from home for the afternoon, which meant he got an extra long walk and a little spoiling today.
Hmm favorite pre-made paleo item... does sushi count? We have a local Japanese market near my work where I get fresh sushi for lunch and it’s delicious.
-
Hi, everyone. I have been getting back on track eating wise after what I am calling a Mardi Gras week fiasco. I went a little more Keto/Paleo for a couple of weeks to reverse the gain from excess carb week. Down 5 lbs. I am also trying to walk more frequently during the work week. A little milder weather is helping that.
Pebbles, your dogs are as cute as ever.
JKL, I will have to try the Paleo granola. DH and I were just discussing tomorrow will be Costco day. I buy Kind bars which are pretty Paleo and really help fill me up. I haven’t tried any of the Paleo pancake mixes.
My bloodwork is not yet normal but improved. Next appt in May. Now they have changed from watching for chronic lymphocytic leukemia to T cell large granular leukemia. I am hoping next appointment things will look better. I feel that this is all related to the virus that landed me in the hospital plus my super stressful job which I hope to be out of in the next couple of months.
-
TwoH, congratulations on the weight loss! I've been right there with you, trying to eat a more paleo diet for the last couple weeks. (Rather than a Mardi Gras fiasco, mine was caused by my REALLY enjoying a lot of great regional food (think Tex-Mex and LOTS of seafood) on vacation. But no regrets; everything I ate was worth it!) FYI, Costco also had a paleo pancake mix that I plan to try. I don't always have the time or desire to cook (and paleo seems to require a LOT of cooking) but I'm trying to eat better so hopefully things like this will help. In addition, I bake paleo cookies and freeze them so I have them available for “cookie emergencies" (that's a real thing, right?).
It must be scary to hear doctors talk about leukemia, TwoH, but it's good news that your blood work has improved. I'm sending positive thoughts that It continues to get better and you find that the abnormal blood work was all related to the virus and job-related stress. Keep us posted!
Pebbles, I love your puppy pics. Keep 'em coming, please! And thanks for the vegan recipes; I have a vegan granddaughter and I am going to fix that pasta for her on her next visit!
Hey, Vamp, you've been very quiet. How are you feeling? GG, how's your recovery going? Is your vision back to normal? Pi-Xi, your exercise choices always inspire me. You are amazing! Junie, thinking of you, too. How's treatment going? Sending gentle hugs to you and Kirby. Ksuze, still walking? Also, waving hi to Inna.
To all the other cave-chicks - hope you're doing well and having too much fun IRL to hang out here! And Egads, sure hope your cave-dude is improving and that you find your way back to the cave soon!
-
JKL, I’m just following the MO’s advice to “Go as hard as you can.” Not sure why I’ve decided to follow that recommendation, as I’m not normally too compliant. 😆
Yesterday’s dinner was stuffed portobello mushrooms and spaghetti squash with too many carbs. I only ate half the bread cubes.
I really appreciate DH’s efforts in the kitchen!
TwoHobbies, I’m glad to hear that you are getting out of your stressful job. (I will definitely have to do that soon, but I want to take a European vacation and we need to buy some furniture first!) What you are going through medically sounds very stressful as well!
Pebbles, I’m jealous that you can bring your dog with you. Our Labrador would have made such a lovely companion and brought joy to so many. People just aren’t so keen on big dogs around - we should have gotten him certified. Alas, he had cancer too and managed to get me to the point where I at least knew my treatment plan before we had to say goodbye. I will miss him forever.
-
Good Morning Everyone! Wow it has been a very long time since I have been on here. Life has been busy with stupid doctor appointments, mystery shopping, cooking, kids, etc. Today is a fairly quiet day, massage therapy for my neck and music lessons for the boys, rest of the day to cook and craft.
How is everyone doing? I am good, some days the neck feels good and others depending of what I have been up to is extra painful. Got my CT results and of course they found something on my liver (I am thinking it's a cyst - it's very common apparently), but because of this there will be a follow up in 3 months. There was also some stuff going on in my stomach they are concerned about, but that will be followed up with the next CT. A small cyst found on left ovary (not surprised, thank you tamoxifen), so that is being followed up with another vaginal ultrasound and thanks to tamoxifen/breast cancer I had to have an endometrial biopsy last Tuesday....this is something I NEVER, EVER want to do again! I thought injections in the areola was painful, I was wrong that was a walk in the park compared to this. Apparently this procedure doesn't hurt everyone, for me it was a form of torture and has left me traumatized!
JKL - Thanks for the vanilla information, I had a few bottles brought back from Mexico and a little nervous to use them. The ingredients are in Spanish and there sure seems to be a lot listed! I am envious of your travelling to warmer climates, I am so over winter and being cold!
Pi- That dinner looks delicious!
Pebbles - the pups are adorable, love the photo's - brightens the day to see such cuties!
TwoHobbies - fantastic job on the weight loss! I have been holding steady this winter and I will take it, usually I gain! I am also sending good thoughts your way. I have to say getting out of a stressful job will do wonders for your body.
Egads is missing all of you. She has lots going on and hopefully will be back to guide us on our healthy lifestyle journey soon!
xxx
-
Hi everyone - glad to hear from a lot of you and hopefully Egads can check in again soon. Thx for the updates Vamps!
TwoHobbies - hopefully April gives you a time to rest and recuperate and enjoy the month free of appointments. I had my first full post-treatment follow-ups with the oncologist and radiologist in March and my next appt. is in June, so I've decided to really enjoy April and May appointment free! I hope you will be able to cut anything stressful out of your life. Health comes first.
JKL - you're welcome, please let me know how your granddaughter enjoys the vegan pasta! And yes cookie emergencies are a real thing. Any cookie recipes to share? I keep baking my almond butter cookies because that's all I know so far that is sugar free LOL.
PiXi - that stuffed portobello mushrooms and spaghetti squash looks delicious! Labs are such amazing dogs too, and so smart, I think yours could have been certified for sure. Our "bigger" dog Tucker (35 lbs) can't come everywhere as freely as little 8 lb. ESA-certified Domino, I wish he could too. And I understand missing your dog every day as around a year ago we lost our sweetest Kit Kat whom I still miss every day. I don't post pics of her as often as it still hurts sometimes, although you see her in my profile pic as she's always part of the paw family (even across the rainbow bridge).
Vamps - oh my, you went through so much with all the tests and scans and prodding again! My you are a strong woman. I think it's good news that they just want to follow up in a few months vs. anything more immediate? So hopefully what was found is nothing too concerning and maybe will go away on its own. OMG I shiver at the thought of the endometrial biopsy, hopefully you will never have to do that again. You are SO BRAVE.
InnaB - see you over on our diet and nutrition thread!
Egads - we are all missing you at the cave! But understand your need to prioritize the hubby and care for him. Can't wait for you to come back when you're ready though.
As for me, I'm trying to combat some weight gain that came from snacking on chili oil (yup, I did that) and the past couple days I've been good and hopefully this weekend I can be both disciplined on food and active so that I can lose more weight. My husband and I are off to Italy in May which will be our first major trip since this whole ordeal started last August, so I'm really looking forward to it. I'm trying to lose 10 lbs before the trip!
Since I brought up Tucker and Kit Kat and Domino, here are a couple pics of the full "paw family".
-
Pebbles, Italy sounds like a lovely idea. I highly recommend a good vacation as soon as you can after treatment. We had gone to Aruba as soon as I finished. I had barely any hair and still had radiation burns and it just took me out of that cancer world and to the beach and ocean. Fabulous.
JKL, I got the Paleo granola and what a sweet treat. I mix it with walnuts(more about that in a minute) to cut the dull/bitter walnut taste.
Vamp sorry about all the follow ups. I can relate. It sucks. I'm shocked about the biopsy pain. My experience was a piece of cake.
Pixie that was my breast surgeons advice too, on exercise. The more the better and go harder-you are young. Which encouraged me-oh she thinks I am young. Why yes I am young so I can do this. LOL.
-
I saw this about walnuts changing the aggression of breast cancer in just two weeks. This is interesting because it was in women with BC confirmed by biopsy, not just mice and not just a recall study of what people ate.The study was sponsored by the Walnut people so I would like to know if other nuts may have same effect, but it's worth it to eat some walnuts I feel. They are probably my least favorite but OK accompanied by other nuts or the granola.
-
I did see the walnut study. I have been eating walnuts every single day for a long time, at least a year. I don't know if it helps or not. I read a study a long time ago that said "people who eat walnuts regularly live longer" I like walnuts so it was easy to incorporate into my breakfast.
Hope all is well with all of you, I've been out in the garden lots & going with the husband on day trips in Clyde (convertible) so not on here much. Went back on paleo a few days ago as some pounds crept up on me (beers on the patio)
cheers to all, dee
-
Hey, cave women. I've been really busy at work and had some other family members' medical stuff going on. I haven't been online much.
My endometrial biopsy a couple of years ago was the most painful thing I've ever experienced, so when I was told that I needed to have a hysteroscopy and have a polyp that showed up on my recent TVUS resected, I simply refused to do it without much more pain control (as in: any).
I had the procedure yesterday and it went really well. The anesthesiologist did the best IV insertion I've experienced in this whole cancer process. The nurses were attentive to my needs and pleasant. The surgeon was communicative and supportive and funny. She says she doesn't think that it was a polyp. Apparently, polyps and fibroids can present the same, and she thinks it was just another fibroid, but she took it and two smaller fibroids out anyway for biopsy, unfortunately needing to leave the two giant submucosal fibroids that have only gotten bigger on tomoxifen and make TVUS imaging difficult. I'll have results this week. Needless to say, I have been off diet for a couple of days, though closer than one might expect. I have spent the day lying down but hope to walk a slow treadmill tomorrow, when I have less post op medication slowing me down.
I'll try to cstch up on how everyone's doing soon.
-
Pebbles - Italy sounds delightful! Don't stress about the weight it will come off, unfortunately not as fast as we would like, but it will happen. I am just happy no gain this winter! Lol
Dee - gardening already?! I can't wait to get out there, too early yet for the Southern Ontario girl.
TwoHobbies - you are one of the few lucky women! Did they freeze you? Give you something? The nurse told me it didn't affect some women, I was not fortunate enough to be ingred of the few.
Ksuze I was thinking about you yesterday while riding my bike. It was the first ride of the year for me and it felt great. I was thinking I may be on my way to catching up with you on the wall. Haha
Well all have a great day today. It looks like we are in for another beauty!
-
Vamp no drugs or anything. She told me to cough and it just felt like a scratch. Not sure if she has fabulous technique or I have no feeling there.
I got my first weeding session in last weekend and shocked today to see spring blooms! There’s hope!
