Lots of complicated cysts & bloody discharge

Hello,

This is my first post here. I am a 28 year old mom of 3 with no history of breast cancer in my family, but there is a history of other cancers.

Last Wednesday I tried to express a little breast milk from my right breast (I am not breastfeeding anymore, have not done so in 6 years, but I have always made a small amount of milk and I was just checking to see if it was still there). When I did this I got orange-red discharge. I made an appointment with my midwife for the next day.

My midwife did a breast exam and found what she described as lumps under both areolas. I had my ultrasound today at a women’s center that specializes in this. Below are the findings and impressions from the radiology report.

At the end of the ultrasound the tech went to get the doctor. The doctor had me express discharge onto a paper towel so that she could observe that it was bloody. I was told by the doctor that nothing was seen on the ultrasound and that the next step is an MRI. If an MRI shows nothing then further testing is necessary and a surgeon may need to be involved.

The report came out an hour after the test. I called my midwife and left a message so that she could put in an order for the MRI.

***anyways***

I’m a little lost, a little scared, yeah. Everything points to complicated cysts probably being benign- but I keep going through the “what if’s”. Like what if they misread the imaging and it’s really solid mass surrounded by fluid...

I have very very small breasts that don’t seem very dense at all, so I think they were able to see everything.

Can someone help me make sense of this all? My discharge has also turned from the rust orange/red color (and no other symptoms) to a thick sticky brownish color (still obviously bloody) with breast pain - feels like mastitis or a plugged duct. The discharge only happens if I express it (so I presume it’s a duct issue).

If my MRI shows nothing and I still have bleeding, I’m guessing next step is surgery.

Radiology stuff

Finding 1: The nipple discharge of the right breast is not seen on ultrasound. On clinical exam, patient expressed bloody right nipple discharge.

Finding 2: There are multiple complicated cysts and cysts of varying size in both breasts.

Impression 1: Area in the right breast requires additional evaluation. A breast MRI is recommended.

Impression 2: Complicated cysts and cysts in both breasts are benign.
