Need advise about ovarectomy
Hi everyone,
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am 53 y.o , 6 months ago diagnosed with IDC and DCIS. MO started Tamoxifen. I am still having periods every month. On my last appointment few weeks ago MO stated he was hoping my periods stopted but he didn't tell that his advise would be to help stop periods. I would like discuss with my family doctor about ovary to be removed. Unfortinatelly physicians will not tell you advise, look like they just watching that will happen next. I would like advocate myself. Should I go forward and speak with family doctor about ovary to be removed.Thank you.

Luba12- I had just turned 49 at time of my diagnosis. After my BMX, ALND, chemo and radiation I wanted to go right to aromatase inhibitors instead of tamoxifen as they have a slightly better track record than tamoxifen. I was still getting my periods so I spoke to my MO and he was on same page as me to go with ovarian suppression shots (zoladex) until I could schedule my ovary removal. I did four months of the shots and started AI's (anastrozole) and then had my ovaries removed. The surgery itself was one of the easier ones as far as recovery. I don't regret it all. If you look up the SOFT trial /results it could help with your decision. I just went with every percentage point I could get so chose ovarian suppression / then removal with AI's. You definitely have to be your own advocate and do your own research! Best of Luck to you.

Hi LeesaD!
I am having ovaries removed also after being on AI. Did you have any worsening side effects, like worsening hot flashes, etc...., after removal? Just trying to manage expectations!
Thanks!

Hi SimoneRC, my side effects did not worsen at all going from the suppression shots to the ovary removal. I honestly didn't notice any difference whatsoever. I still get maybe one hot flash a day but they did not get worse once the ovaries were taken out. My MO had tested my estrogen levels while on the shots and the levels were virtually undetectable due to the shots so the shots were doing their.job but ovary removal was always the end plan. Best of Luck!
