Hi. I am headed to NOLA on 3/14 for DIEP with Dr. Sullivan.

I was diagnosed 10 years ago - had chemo, rads and implants after mastectomy. The radiated skin finally gave up last year and after multiple infections and almost exposing, I lost the implant on radiated side. I had both implants removed and waited to heal. I had a consult in NOLA in December and am sceheduled for surgery.

Any words of advice? I am hoping I made the right call with NOLA. I could have done MSK. I am hoping I dont have any major complications - after 4 hospitalizations last year due to implant infections I am scared.

    Dear Everyminute,

I can't speak to MSK, but I can tell you the care you will receive at NOLA is outstanding.

I had a local recurrence 16 years after mastectomy and silicone implant reconstruction, and after radiation my already-ruptured implant failed on the affected side. By the time I was cleared for flap surgery two years out, my implants were 18 years old and they needed to go.

I am freshly off of Stage 1. I did have a complication, and Dr. S and his team sprang to action so quickly I can still scarcely believe it. Not a doubt in my mind you have made a great call.

My only advice is to bring someone with you who won't be squeamish about drains, fresh incisions, or post-surgical moodiness from you. You will need a lot of help early on. It helps a lot to walk as much in the hospital as you can, and after you are released, which isn't necessarily easy. Make sure you are clear on the ways you can and cannot move after surgery and for how long - the written instructions just aren't the the same as a good demo from the nurses. Be gentle with yourself. Best of luck!

    Yuuk
