Hi all- had surgery 6 weeks ago (lumpectomy) and today was my first radiation treatment. I guess I wasn’t expecting to have any symptoms for a week or two, but it already burns a bit and itches quite a bit. I put aquapho on right away. Has anyone else had symptoms after only one treatment?

Hi Stanford, I also had my lumpectomy 6 weeks ago(on 1/7) and I had my first treatment yesterday(2/20), and I had my second treatment today. So far I haven't noticed any difference. I put lotion on immediately after treatment when I'm changing and then again after I shower before bed. Keep us posted!

Be sure to wash it off before treatment

I did have initial symptoms...it turned pink and was a little swollen. That went away after a couple of days, and then the actual burning settled in about 9 or so treatments in. They told me it was impossible to have side effects after the first treatment, but it was undeniable.

My radiologist was so insistant that we use pure lanolin that she gave it to her patients free. I slathered it on thick afterwards and had just the palest hint of pink at the end of treatments. You have to sacrifice a t-shirt to sleep in unless you want to boil it out. Most of it soaked into the shirt overnight. I was always a bit sticky after washing in the morning but they said that was ok, They didn't want us scrubbing hard or using solvents, just soap. I used Dove hypoallergenic, fragrance-free soap.

Thanks! It was better by morning. I wonder if it’s from the aquaphor. I tried aloe Vera today and it was better.

Hi, Stanford. I am 2 weeks post rads today. I definitely had a reaction to my 1st treatment. I asked my RO about it and he said yes, it is possible and that he does see it occasionally. I was red & swollen immediately after every one of my treatments. At first, it would go away through the day but then it settled in full time. My center provided me with tubes of hydrogel and told me to mix it with either castor oil or avocado oil. I would use that or pure organic aloe vera immediately after each session before I put my clothes back on. It pulled out a lot ofthe heat and lessened the discomfort quite a bit. For me, some of the heavier creams & lotions felt like they were sealing in the heat. I used those once I got back home and could get my top off again. 3 Things to remember: Everyone is different. The side effects are temporary. You Can Do This! 😊

I had my seventh treatment today and still no symptoms. I started using Biafine this week which my RO recommended, but I only put it on my lumpectomy scars.

Happy to find this thread! I start RADs on April 10. Concerned about the SE.I’ve been told by the nurse to use Lubiderm. Seriously?
