Good Morning All,

I was recently diagnosed with DCIS Stage 0 High Grade 3 with Comedonecrosis 6.0 mm in one area of left breast. No other areas.ER Positive 90% 3+ strong, Ki-67 High 60% (what does Ki 67 mean)? The doctor recommends a lumpectomy with radiation and hormone therapy. Is this the common treatment for this? I have been researching and I'm concerned about the high grade and it coming back.. I had a full hysterectomy in 2012 and was taking estradiol. (Not anymore). Please share any thoughts. Thanks!

Lisa227 - I was diagnosed with 1cm of DCIS about a year and a half ago, also grade 3. Because of small breasts and symmetry I opted for a BMX. I would have chosen this any way but that was only because I felt strongly about wanting to be as aggressive as possible, in the hopes of never having to go through all that again. If you opt for lumpectomy I believe the standard protocol is radiation and hormone therapy. Some things that might aid in your decision is having an MRI to see if anything else could be lurking. Two other areas were discovered that I had biopsied and while they were both benign I didn't want it to become something else later nor did I want to keep going back for checkups. My DCIS was missed on both mammogram and ultra sound so I wasn't putting much trust in that finding anything. Genetic testing may also make you feel better about whichever choice you make.

There's no wrong decision, just the one that will make you feel the most comfortable.

I do not and I don't remember seeing anything like that in my results.

    Hi Lisa!

This is what you can read in our main site about Ki-67:

    Article: Rate of Cell Growth:

"Ki-67: Ki-67 is a protein in cells that increases as they prepare to divide into new cells. A staining process can measure the percentage of tumor cells that are positive for Ki-67. The more positive cells there are, the more quickly they are dividing and forming new cells. In breast cancer, a result of less than 10% is considered low, 10-20% borderline, and high if more than 20%

"Ki67 blood levels (Ki67 levels are linked to a cancer's tendency to grow and spread; doctors call Ki67 a tumor cell proliferation marker)"

    We hope this helps!

If it makes you feel any better, I don't think I've ever seen a DCIS grade that was less than 3. Lumpectomy and radiation (plus the AI for hormone receptor positive tumors) is a typical treatment plan, particular for a tumor as small as yours.
