Scheduled Double Biopsy

edited February 2019 in Waiting for Test Results

I am 47 years old. Went to have a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound on January 22, 2019. Architectural Distortion was seen on the U/S and it was recommended to have MRI and follow up with breast surgeon as results were inconclusive. Went to recommended breast surgeon who wanted to do biopsy without ultrasound guidance ( he drew a circle around my lump and said he feels it) instead of mri but agreed to the mri after we talked. I was told they’d call me that day once insurance was pre-certified. Fast forward three days, still no call. So I called and questioned mri appointment scheduling. I was told that insurance denied it and that biopsy would be scheduled within three days. After hanging up, I had a gut feeling- not sure what but wanted some answers about insurance.

I called my insurance company who shocked me by stating that the pre-cert was pulled by the physician and it was actually never approved or denied!

I immediately got a recommendation to another breast surgeon and went to that appointment yesterday. I had another mammogram. Then they needed more images. After these were done I had another ultrasound and the radiologist told me that there are multiple areas of architectural distortion and a stereotactic biopsy would be done in two places of my right breast next Friday. She informed me that it could be cancer or a radical scar lesions. She also told me that the lump I am feeling is actually not their concern- as it is a cyst. (So the original surgeon wasn’t even going to be biopsying the right area after all).

Unbelievably, I am not overwhelmed with fear. I met the most amazing team and feel confident that whatever happens I am in good hands. I think the waiting until 2-15-19 for the biopsy and then for the results is the hardest part.

I am curious if anyone has had multiple areas of distortion and what that means? I’m keeping positive, but needing some support.

Thanks for listening.

I had one area of distortion show up on my routine 3D mammogram. I had to go back in for more imaging and the tech found another area. I was told this can be from a previous biopsy which I didn’t have. The two areas didn’t show on ultrasound either. Biopsies were recommended and both came back ILC.

I was surprised as well as the radiologist who did my biopsies considering nothing showed on ultrasound and no lump was felt.

It’s hard waiting and not knowing what the outcome will be. We are here for you. Being positive is key and just breathe. Keeping busy helped me. Good luck! Hugs!

    Hi Jenkins00,

Thank you so much for getting back to me. I appreciate you sharing your story and diagnoses with me. I will keep busy for sure- I teach third grade and they will definitely help take my mind off of this. I’ll keep you posted as I learn more. I appreciate your support so very much!

Lisamcd, welcome! A distortion just means an area that looks different from the tissues around it. I'm glad you reached out to your insurance company, and that you have found a surgeon and radiologist that make you feel confident. Definitely try and keep busy between now and the 15th, and be careful about Google. There is a lot of misleading and just plain wrong info out there. Until you have a diagnosis, you won't know what is applicable to your situation. The waiting stinks, I know! I had a stereotactic needle biopsy and it wasn't that bad. They told me to plan an hour for it, but I was in and out in 30 minutes because they were able to quickly find the area that concerned them. Wear a separate top and bottom. You'll change into a gown like for a mammogram, but I definitely felt more comfortable with pants on. Bring your favorite OTC pain reliever and water with you to take when you leave, before the Novocain wears off. I wasn't working the day of my biopsy, but I definitely could have gone to work afterwards. Then again, I just work in an office instead of teaching 3rd grade! I'll be thinking of you on Friday and hoping for benign results for you. Good luck, and keep us posted!

    GreenHarbor,

Thank you!!!! You’re reply to me means so much. I appreciate all of the info on the biopsy and the advice that you shared. And I appreciate you telling me about google too. Of course, that’s the first thing I did. I never thought I’d get so much out of joining and writing here in this forum, but just since last night, I am feeling great about finding people who have been though what I am experiencing. I appreciate you sharing with me
