Hello! I have had right breast pain for 7 months. Family practitioner sent me for a mammo and sono. Both were normal. Still having pain so was referred to a breast specialist/oncologist. Tried her regime to help breast pain for 6 weeks and it did not improve so I got an MRI. The MRI results came back and the radiologist that read it thought it was an infection that there was lots of inflammation in my right breast. My breast Dr ruled infection out and said maybe yeast with a shrug agreed lots of inflammation. So I’m starting a 2 week course of antifungals and a topical anti inflammatory. Anyways if it doesn’t improve in 2 weeks she said I could wait for more symptoms to appear or things to show up on ultrasound or mammo or I can opt for a mri guided breast biopsy. I feel like she has no clue what it is. Maybe I need a second opinion? I’m wondering if anyone has had similar results, and if getting two mris so close is safe

I don't have any real answers for you. I'm wondering why the breast specialist thinks it's fungal vs bacterial. It seems like if there's inflammation with no known cause and a suspicion of infection - maybe both antibiotics and antifungals would be prescribed. That's my two cents.

Since MRI's don't expose you to radiation, I wouldn't think there'd be any harm in having two close together. At least they can compare them. Do they have a very specific area that they would biopsy? What did the radiologist recommend on their report?

    1. thanks for the reply. She said bacterial I’d have other symptoms and it would have been helped by the compresses, and nsaids she had me take before or that it would be seen on her sonogram. Not sure if that’s really the case though just what she said. I don’t think she really suspects yeast just think she has no clue and is just throwing random stuff at it to see if it fixes it. There is no radiation with MRIs but they inject you with a heavy metal that is now understood to not fully leave the body and can settle into the brain and cause problems. I didn’t see the report she just said that the radiologist thought it was infection. I definitely need to get a copy of the report and will do that tomorrow. I saw the mri and there were lots of white streaks all over maybe 35% of the breast. Definitely seems odd she’s just trying fungal meds I thought id have some itching and irritation If that was the case. Guess that’s part of why I’m uneasy about all of this

There are various contrast materials that are used - some safer than others. And there's the possibility of doing the MRI without contrast. I guess you have to weigh the potential risk against the benefit if only the MRI is showing anything.

Definitely get the report for your records. There should be recommendations for what kind of follow up and timing noted.
