Waiting for Biopsy

Hi Everyone!

This is my first post. For the last 6 months or more I had a lump that I completely ignored, as everyone assured me it was nothing as I'm 33 years old. (Also, I'm a bit of a hypochondriac so they're probably sick of my false alarms). I had an ultrasound that showed an irregular hypoechoic solid mass that they are going to biopsy. I don't make a habit of staring at my breasts, but now I see that my nipple is inverted on that side. I'm totally convinced I have bc, just agonizing over the waiting period as I can't get it biopsied for another two weeks! And then another two weeks for results. Can the Dr doing the biopsy give me some idea before it goes to pathology? Thanks all for your input!

Hi Mistyk - I have a similar story to yours and I am 31. Waiting is the name of the game, and it never gets easier! Once you have your biopsy though, you should hear back pretty quick and then you'll know either way! The doctor will likely not give you any preliminary results until they are finalized.

Not to scare you, but the outward, visible changes to my breast were major clues in my case. My nipple started turning to the left (tumor was left breast, outer lower quadrant).I had a mammo and US that showed nothing abnormal. I followed up with a BS and he said it was normal changes to the breast as we age (I was 29 at the time) and I had recently quit breastfeeding my 3rd son. He did not recommend a biopsy at this time. As the months went on, the nipple was turning more and more and I had an indentation that was becoming more pronounced. These changes were evident regardless of my position or moving around. After almost 2 years, I went back for another mammo and US and the BS strongly recommended a biopsy this time....the rest, they say, is history.

On another note, there are a lot of benign conditions that can cause these changes too. I have had fibroadenomas in each of my breasts since my early teens, and the size of them can cause visible changes, esp as they get bigger.

Just know the biopsy is the best thing you can do right now....its the only thing that will give you a definitive answer. Best of luck to you and keep us updated!

Thanks Each_day. Today I had my biopsy. The radiologist says it's most likely a papilloma, but I also have what he thinks is a debris filled duct close to my nipple that might be causing the changes. However, won't know for sure what it is until next week when I get the biopsy results. I still don't have a good feeling about it. Sorry about your experience! How frustrating your doctor ignored your symptoms like that!

Hi gpowell. So my path report reads, "proliferative fibrocystic changes without atypia." So I'm in the clear for now, but not sure what any of it means though. I have an appointment with my dr this week though to go over the results so hopefully I'll know what I'm dealing with.
