Fibroadenoma at 43

I had an ultrasound (I have dense breasts) last Thursday and they found what is "probably" a fibroadenoma. They suggested waiting 6 months and then having another ultrasound and continue that course for two years to see if there are any changes. Now, my anxiety is sky high, I'm in therapy and take medication for it, so there is no way I can wait 6 months because I will be thinking I have breast cancer the entire time, not great for my mental and emotional health. Thankfully, my doctor understood and referred me for a biopsy, which will happen on Thursday. I'm concerned that it's a phyllodes tumor and not a fibroadenoma and they won't be able to tell the difference. Everything I've read says phyllodes tumors are more common in women in their 40's and fibroadenomas are more common in women in their 20s and 30s. I've also ready that they share a lot of features and that it can be difficult to distinguish between the two, even with a core needle biopsy. Has anyone had any experience with this?

    Hi Sugarfoot,

We're so sorry you're here and worrying -- we hope the biopsy brings you some clarity and relief. Please keep us posted with what you find out. Others will surely be by soon to weigh in with their thoughts and experiences!

Maybe I'm the exception, but I had 3 brand new fibroadenomas pop up in my mid 40's (one each year for 3 years in a row!) - all of them had at least one 'suspicious' imaging characteristic so they needed to be biopsied. In my case I think the pathology for each of them was clear to just be fibroadenoma, and none of them have grown or caused additional problems. Now at 50 I just had a new 'probable' small fibroadenoma pop up, but since it lacks any suspicious characteristics on imaging, we're just going to do repeat mammo/ultrasound in 6 months for this one to make sure it hasn't changed.

I'm sorry this has caused you worry - and I'm glad you can get the biopsy (and answers) soon! I know how stressful this can be - but it is good that your doctor is being thorough. Wishing you benign results!

Biopsy results came back and it's not a fibroadenoma, it's an intraductal papilloma. They are recommending I have it removed because it is a "high risk precursor." I see a BS on Tuesday. I posted a long update on the benign breast conditions forum, it's called Misdiagnosed. My apologies, I'm not allowed to post links.
