HI Ladies

So in hopes of trying to have a somewhat of a normal life, I am trying to figure out how to deal with bras after reconstruction? I had a double mastectomy back in July and just last week had my implants put in. I'm obviously wearing a very sexy medical bra right now, but soon I'll be going back to work and would like wear more normal bras. What have other done? Is there a brand you recommend? Any advice on this topic is much appreciated.

Bras for me were a personal nightmare since I was a drastically different bra size than before even though I'm not that much different in actual size.

The Natori Bliss Perfection wire free T shirt bra and the Soma embraceable bras are the ones that I'm wearing now. They look normal under clothes. It took quite a lot of searching though. My surgeon has said no underwire allowed!

Yummie also makes some bras that are wire free and are good for wearing around the house; they also work under clothes. I have a couple of those too, they are not as supportive as the two I mentioned above.

Anything is better than those awful surgical bras! Definitely not clothes-friendly!

    Good luck!

The only thing I was told after my double mastectomy was not to wear a bra with a wire. I tend to wear bras that are light and don't put much pressure on my traps. I'm sure you will find some that are very comfortable. The whole process of adjustment takes time. Mine was done in 2007. Just now I wanted to check what bra I had on and I realized that today I just wore an undershirt. I'm sure most of you know understand what I'm saying.

My PS told me that I could wear whatever bra I wanted after six weeks. I was most comfortable with some very stretchy front close ones that I purchased from Amazon. I think I was about ten weeks out when I went for a bra fitting at a specialty shop.

I would definitely recommend a fitting. While I don't look a lot different in clothes than before and the weigh is similar to what was removed - the implants are much wider. My cup size went from a B (probably should have been a C) to a DDD or E depending on brand.

My favorite bras are a couple Natori ones I got from Nordstrom's. Only things I've ever bought from there!

Check out Bras101 in the Breast Reconstruction forum. Lots of bra ideas there.

I like wearing kind of stretchy bras. The only thing I was told was not to wear an underwire. The bras also have a small pad because the place where my nipples were, is a little obvious because the nipples are very large. There's just skin there, but they seem to be getting larger as I get older. Crazy! I know that they are much larger than my old, normal nipples. I wouldn't want them to be seen through a thin bra and thin blouse.

I had DIEP flap reconstruction and my PS told me after four weeks in the surgical bra he wanted me to go without for a while to see if it would help with my breast shape. After just a couple days I saw an improvement in my shape and my breasts look way more “natural" now since I haven't been compressing them in a bra. It's strange going out without one but I'm getting used to the freedom. Not sure how long he's going to want me without. We will see

I just learned by reading on this community, the insurance might cover your mastectomy bras, some a limited number a year (3 or 4) and some like Cigna, unlimited. I have Cigna and on their website they say Mastectomy bras are covered following a mastectomy under a customer's medical benefit but i need to call and ask about any limitations.
I received a prescription for mastectomy bra from my plastic surgeon and i understood Nordstrom is in Cigna network, for example, e.g. the store could submit the claim directly to the insurance. This could make our lives a bit easier. I wanted to mention just in case someone did not know ( like me...)

You need a fitting. Reconstructed breasts sit differently in a bra than natural ones. Nordstrom does these special fittings, and most of the time, Victoria Secret does too. There's no Nordstrom where I live so I went to VS. They have a team of awesome ladies, they spent almost an hour with me trying various brands and sizes and shapes, and in the end they gave me a card with the brands and sizes that fit me so I can buy online too. I, too, found myself going from a C+ to a D D, DDD or E depending on the brand.
