Surgery before genetic results

Has anyone went ahead with surgery before genetic testing cane back? I know for sure I need single mastectomy and prefer to stick with my surgery as everything is planned and set for next Wednesday. I figure I can always go back later and do the other side if needed. I'm ok with doing one side at a time.

My area of DCISin my right breast is 13 cm so we are doing a mastectomy with it being so large. I will also have a sentinel node biopsy as are there prominent nodes shown in imaging as well.

My surgeon was hoping to have my genetic results back in time but it’s not looking good that they will be at this time.

Lindzfay, I am in the same boat you’re in. My draw was on 1/10/19 for testing. I was supposed to do pre op this past Thursday but no one called me to schedule it. So on Thursday I called the BS office and was told there was some discrepancies with the dates and my insurance. Needless to say the test has yet to be processed. My pre op is now on Monday with my surgery still scheduled for lump with SN biopsy on Friday 2/1/19

If you are fine w two surgeries, I say less is more. It's ok to go either way but in my personal case I would be pissed to give up a healthy breast unnecessarily

I couldn't even get an appointment to meet with the genetics person until weeks after when I ultimately had the surgery. I was a little concerned but my surgeon explained that it would be at least a month until we got results if they went ahead with testing, which would delay the surgery and leave lots of treatment questions up in the air for longer. It felt like it made sense to just go ahead and get the cancer out and begin dealing with it and then if there's reason to go back and do other stuff I'll do that but it won't have the same sense of urgency because it's preventative rather than reactive. I'll get genetic results on Tuesday.

Welcome, Lindzfay! We hope you've found the support and guidance you're looking for here at BCO. It's common to have surgery before your genetic results come back, as you've seen from some of the replies from other members. When is your surgery scheduled? We hope all goes well!

it is scheduled for next Wednesday and my genetic testing was about 10 days ago but my genetic counselor thinks it’s unlikely that it will be back by Wednesday.

I had my surgery scheduled before I received my genetic testing results. I wound up receiving them the Friday before my surgery on a Wednesday. The surgical schedule was pretty tight. If I had waited for results before deciding on a single vs double, my surgical date would have moved out at least a month. I went for the double thinking I could always dial it back to a single if the genetic tests changed my mind, but it didn't. I went for the double purely because my breasts were so hard to image accurately and I didn't want the worry. My best to you Lindzfay hope the surgery goes easy for you and that recovery is swift!
