I had surgery in November. Have come to find out, the wires were misplaced. The DCIS is still there. Have no idea what the plan is. Anyone experience this? I really hope not

I'm so sorry to hear that. Was the biopsy clip missed? I just had a wire-guided lumpectomy myself. My hospital took a mammogram of the removed tissue sample with the wires in it. It didn't show the biopsy clip in the mass, so they took more tissue until the mammogram showed the biopsy clip in the removed tissue. Ended up being almost a three hour surgery because of missing it the first time.

I had a mammogram and the wires were inserted. Told I was a puzzle. Next doc thought it a mystery. Not what you want to hear. Two months they finally have said they missed it so it’s still therd

    Hi Dasme-

Goodness, how frustrating and scary! Have you undergone any other treatment since then, or have your doctors said when your next surgery would be scheduled? We're so sorry to hear this, we can't imagine the shock. Please keep us posted on next steps!

waiting for a game plan. Extremely frustrating. They leave you in the dark because god forbid we tell the patient what happened. I’ll keep you posted! Thanks for your kind words

I would absolutely seek a second opinion. That's for sure. Sorry you are dealing with this.

I am so very sorry to hear this. Just last Thursday I had a wire guided lumpectomy. The radiologist took extreme care to place the wire so that it took the shortest route to touch the titanium marker. It took a couple of times push/pull to get it right. The surgeon knew just where to go with the excellent wire placement. Still, with all that care I found out yesterday I did not get clear margins. I have to have another surgery in a couple of weeks.

I think we have to remember that the surgeon cannot SEE the cancer. S/he uses experience, guidance and art I think to try to take just enough to get clear margins, wihout taking too much of our precious breast tissue. The surgeon looks at the removed tissue under mammography once it is removed, so s/he should see the marker. However, it isn't until under the pathologist's microscope do they really know what they got.

Yes, there is a lot of science here, but it is a lot of experience too. If you don't have confidence in the expertise of your surgeon, please don't feel anything but reasonable in asking for a second professional opinion.

I wish you wonderful outcomes in the end.
