Has anyone had a benign sclerotic bone lesion?
It started with a cough that just won't go away. I saw my primary care doc, and she sent me for a CT scan, with my history of IDC. The CT scan results came back with small nodules in my lungs and a sclerotic thickening at the top of my sternum. I had the nuclear bone scan done last Thursday and will see my MO this afternoon for results. I googled everything I could the last few days, but I haven't seen anyone say that they got the all clear after a nuclear bone scan. Is my life about to change dramatically, or am I worrying for nothing?

Nodules in the lung can be a whole lot of things; most of them not cancer. I am not sure about the bone thickening. Let us know what MO says. Hoping these are benign findings.

Bumping in hopes of further responses, thanks.

I have a couple of benign bone islands show up on CTs. My understanding from my MO is they’re benign sclerotic lesions. Hopefully that’s what yours is and you get good news this afternoon.

Thank you, KBeee and Nancy. Just over two more hours and I will find out for certain.

I had CT and bone scan 4 years ago this month when my routine blood test revealed elevated calcium. Nothing remarkable seen at that time (follow-up imaging for lung nodules 6 months later showed stability). Labs continued to bump up against the upper end of normal when checked but it was quite a while before metastatic disease became evident.I wonder whether a few mutant cells were already getting a foothold back then. Symptoms did not occur until lesions were spread throughout my skeleton and had eaten away a lumbar vertebrae which collapsed.
Good thing your doctors are investigating. Deep breaths usually calm me down when anticipating results...

Yes, it IS possible to have sclerotic lesions that are benign! MO reported to me yesterday that there was no uptake at all on the nuclear bone scan. I had blood work just to get a baseline on markers. I will have a follow-up CT scan in 6 months to see if the lung nodules disappear or are stable. I feel like a new person today!

YAY!!! That’s wonderful news!! Thanks for reporting back, too, so others can follow.

Great news!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Frustrating they did not call you as soon as they knew to alleviate your fear!

I did have a nodule one time in my right upper lobe, It was behind bone and couldn't be biopsied. It was removed and happened to be MAC, mycobacteria avium complex, which is related to TB. If it had spread from that nodule, I would have been in trouble but not as much trouble as cancer. Keep your chin up. Hope you get good news.

Glad to see a benign sclerotic lesion on this post. I had one show up on an X-ray of my hip and have to have a bone scan the day before Thanksgiving. Trying not to freak out but that is not always easy.

I had a sclerotic lesion show up on a bone scan. Iliac bone. I had a biopsy done on it and it was benign. That was the hardest time of my life, so I always try to share my outcome...they can absolutely be benign

Thank you so much kathabus for sharing your experience. It helped me so much when the anxiety tried to take over.
Did the bone scan today and the office called with the results in the early evening. Only spot that lit up on the scan was the one on my hip. That is very good news so far. Now they have me scheduled for an mri on Monday evening to check the lesion and determine if they need to biopsy or if it is just a "bone island." Still have more waiting but my MO is not nearly as concerned now.

Just want to wish you well denise! Please keep us posted on MRI results....

Wanted to post an update. Got my MRI results today. Long story short....the spot on my hip has all the characteristics of a benign lesion and is nonaggressive. They will scan me again in three months to make sure there is no change in the shape. She did not want to biopsy because it would be hard to get a good sample which leads to wrong test results. So the best way to make sure is to scan it again in three months. She said she and the radiologist feel this is the best way to proceed. The spot had well circumscribed edges and was not deep in the bone at all. 🙌🏻

So happy to hear your good news!!!! Thanks for sharing!
