Aspiration and/or biopsy tomorrow morning

Hello everyone,

I’ve been reading the heck out of these boards in the past few days (thank you all SO much for your contribution, there is so much great information and context) and due to a lump I felt 3 months ago, a diagnostic mammogram and ultrasound 10 days ago it was recommended I get it biopsied. They will attempt to aspirate it in case it’s a cyst, and if doesn’t collapse do an ultrasound guided biopsy instead.

The lump itself feels about an inch round but the ultrasound shows a cluster of simple cysts with a “hypoechoic mass, avascular, rounded, partially circumbscribed, partially obscured 9x7x8mm with edge shadowing and no central shadowing”. In general it said I have scattered fibrodensities with BIRADS 4 and my right breast has no suspicious findings.

I’m posting tonight so that I can gather my thoughts and update the outcome for anyone else with a similar experience or report.

I’m kicking myself for procrastinating the mammogram (last one was March 2016, all clear) as I’m now 43. My excuse is that I’ve been struggling with a rheumatoid arthritis diagnosis and just kind of burned out on dealing with that (I’m feeling better than I have in years now under the care of a great doc and meds that actually work!)

I’m being seen at a top breast cancer hospital and feel completely at ease with the care I’ve gotten and confident I’ll get the best possible care regardless of what is going on.

All that said, I am usually very analytical but have a very superstitious side that is telling me that if I don’t freak out the result will be bad — but if I do freak out it will be totally benign. I’ve chosen not to freak out, and figured this post will serve as my “freak out moment”, LOL!

Anyway, I’ve learned quite a lot about what breast cancer is and isn’t reading these boards in the past 10 days and I wanted to thank everyone for it.

    Sorry you have to do this, but you do have to do it-- and remember, many many of these things are benign--- just put one foot in front of the other-- get the biopsy, get the results and you will deal with whatever you have to deal with--everyone here will be here hoping for negative results and will be helpful if the outcome is not what you want. Hopefully, since you have been reading, you know that everyone here has handled whatever has been handed to them and you will too!! You are not alone with this.

    I wouldn't kick yourself about this-sounds like you were focused on the RA which I am sure is challenging. One of the positive things about having had some health challenge before bc is that you have some coping and management skills if you need them. Sounds like you are focused on the positive, good hospital care, etc. It is a stressful time as you get tested and wait for results; we all understand that-and we refere to it as the worst time in the process since you have no information. Hopefully it won't be necessary to wait for anything because it will be benign!!!

    Update, great news... while the lump was still there and visible on ultrasound the radiologist was able to drain and collapse it. Nothing to biopsy, back to regularly scheduled annual mammograms!

    Momandtwokids,

    You said something that stood out to me when I read it..."Hopefully it won't be necessary to wait for anything because it will be benign!!!" Is it possible that you will be told it's benign at time of biopsy?? I have a biopsy scheduled for tomorrow and I'm heard inconsistencies when it comes to what the radiologists will actually tell you at time of biopsy. I know that we technically have to wait to receive the pathology report, but do you know of instances of when the radiologists let you know if they think it's benign or malignant?

    I was told that if it was actually a cyst (it drained and collapsed on ultrasound) that was an immediate benign finding. But, if it didn’t and they needed to take tissue samples via biopsy it would be two days.

    Okay, I had my biopsy today and I'm more confused than ever! So the tech takes me in to have another ultrasound done before the dr comes in to do the biopsy. I asked her why this mass looks more suspicious than the other three lesions I have and she says "it doesn't to me." Then she continues the ultrasound and starts taking multiple pics and measurements of yet another area! The dr comes in and I ask about the area the tech had taken pics of and she says if didntvalarm her, she proceeded to do the ultrasound to get ready for biopsy and as she's doing it tells me that she believes it's a cyst/benign and that she may not be able to get a sample because she believes it will collapse. She starts the procedure and ends up taking three samples...not a cyst. I was doing more research today...I know, I know...but it turns out even biopsy results have a high chance of being wrong...WTH!!!
