I will need three seeds placed to mark the area of my DCIS. Wondering who has done this? Is it basically like a biopsy routine?

Thanks

Is this the wire placement? If so, my radiologist did it. I didn't like it (I have issues with needles and faint) and probably should have requested something to calm my nerves beforehand.

When I had my core needle biopsy the surgeon place markers in the biopsy area. The markers are to "mark" the area which makes it easier to locate if the biopsy comes back positive for BC. I didn't feel anything when the markers where launched. It just made a popping sound kind of like a nerf gun. After the lumpectomy more markers were added.

I already have two biopsy markers.

These are radioactive seeds that they place days prior to surgery to locate the dcis at surgery time. It is used instead of the wire.

    BWH5,

Are you referring to having a savi scout placement? I had a savi scout placed a couple days prior, this was instead of the wire locator (I wasn't too informed on either but my surgeon happen to do the savi scout and after hearing about the wire locator I was really grateful to have the savi scout). I had a stereotactic biopsy, and for me, the savi scout placement was much easier. If this is the procedure you are having and you have specific questions I'll be happy to answer if I can.

Sitti. Yes that is what I am talking about. I figured it would be a bit like the biopsies. I am glad to hear it is better.

I am guessing it will be put in with a mammo? I had one biopsy sitting up. One on my stomach.

    How is the seed done?

    Thanks for your help.

    BWH5,

Yes, it is done with a mammo, my breast was placed in between the mammo glass and compressed, I think they were locating the marker/s so they would know where to place the savi scout. Once marker/s were located they placed the savi scout (honestly don't remember exactly how, (maybe with a needle/syringe), but it wasn't bad) I was in an upright position and the hardest part was just sitting still in the mammo with the compression (mammo's are never comfortable). I think I only had 1 savi placed and I'm seeing you will have 3 placed so my time was probably shorter than you will experience.

My experience overall was much better than biopsy (which incidently I had done on my stomach) and was quicker too.

When is your procedure? Please update if you don't mind and let us know how you are doing?

I had radioactive seeds instead of wire before the lumpectomy. Much easier than the biopsy. Wasn't bad at all.

Thank you ladies for your replies.

Sitti. They are trying to coordinate my surgery. I was told today it would be 1/31, 2/7 or 2/11. I will know which date by Friday. Then they will make the appt for the seed placement.

Who put the seed in? Your breast surgeon or a different doctor?

My BS scheduled an appt for me at the breast center next to the hospital, and the radiologist did the procedure. Got to go home right after placement, it saves you from having to be at hospital extra hours ahead of actual surgery.

I had what was called a surgical clip placed at the time of my biopsy to mark the area.

I had a clip placed at the time of my biopsy to mark the area and will have the guide wire placed on the day of surgery. My surgery is set for Friday the 8th.
