Partial breast radiation vs whole

I am about to start radiation shortly after Left, lumpectomy for IDC, stage 1, grade 2, 1.1cm, HR+HER-, Node -, margins neg, no vascular, Oncotype 6. I will be on an AI for 5 years after radiation complete. I am 66 years old and in good health-so to speak... My doctors feel I am a candidate for a partial breast radiation because of these good results but I am nervous about not doing the whole breast radiation even though the statistics are minimally different in the most recent study in December. Anyone out there have experience with this? Thanks

Smirl, can you post your diagnosis and treatments in the signature or list them in a post? That would give an indication as to what your radiologist is basing his recommendation on. I was offered partial radiation and wanted to take it but decided that because there weren't any studies on this for patients who were HER2+, otherwise I would have done it.

Welcome, smlri! We're sorry for the circumstances that have brought you here, but we're glad you've joined our community, and hope it can be source of support for you. Are you referring to the NSABP B-39/RTOG 0413 study? We have some information on our main site (which we linked there), and according to the data, it appears as though there was >1% difference in the risk of recurrence. It's definitely worth talking to your doctor about some of the different delivery methods and what your options are based on your diagnosis, but it does seem to be a viable option for some women! Please keep us posted on what you decide!

I can't speak for the statistics, but I opted for accelerated partial breast radiation. I was 51 at time of diagnosis. My radiation was prior to surgery which is a bit of an outlier, part of a trial. For me personally, I felt the benefits were worth any potential risk, but every case and circumstance is different.

Thank you for your thoughts. I just am hoping to make an informed decision and not worry if I made the wrong choice. I am retired so my choice has nothing to do with getting it done quickly due to distance from center or other responsibilities.

Yes, I believe we are talking about that study published in December and is posted here on your site. I had pretty much decided on partial breast but then read the article yesterday and saw that 1% difference and that 161 women had a recurrence and 90 were the partial breast. But the women in the study were not all the same- different stages, recommended for chemo, not post menopausal, etc. So how big is that 1%?From what I've read, I would appear to be a good candidate with my early stage, slow growing, hormone receptive, neg, clear margin tumor, nightmare. My husband, who has been with me for every step believes it is a good choice but it is ultimately my decision and I pray I will have no regrets. Thanks for all of your input.

smirl, thank you for bringing up the issue of the cohorts in they study--were they same stage, hormone positive, etc.
