New here! 9 days post op questions
Hi.
Just had a mx and doing well, mentally and physically. Been through a lot the last few years.... Hysterectomy for a stage 1 hyperplasia after going 4 years w/o a period after abblation. Knee replacement, carriage tunnel surgery, now this. My husband is a PCP so I am in a good place mentally because of that. Still....
So I have no cancer left! Amen! God is good, and I will not complain especially after reading so many posts here. I would like some advice, though.
My drain is still in and due to come out tomorrow, but my output is still 60 and above. After a hot shower, the ball fills up before I'm done. The site is so irritated. I'd like to somehow get there drainage to move along faster but I guess that's not possible unless I stay in the shower!!
I'm not wearing the compression bras that I bought after my lumpectomy. But I did purchase some lighter compression bras from Amazon that are more comfortable. Should I return to the full compression bra to help with drainage?
My nipple was reattached, it looks dead. PS said that's normal and I'm getting some pinkish color back. I noticed that the edges of the aerola is dry and lifting a bit. Is this normal? I keep thinking it's the surgical glue, but is surgical glue used there???
My entire left "breast" is just sore and at times painful.... All the way to my sternum. The outside half of my breast has feeling, the other doesn't. Will it always be this way?
I have a bazillion other questions, but for right now those are my primary concern. I see the PS tomorrow, but I wanted to ask this of you that are or have experienced these issues.
Thanks!!!

LabMom3 You have had a rough rode! So sorry you are facing yet another hurdle. Your diagnosis is almost identical to mine for size.
As far as drains, my doctor said they needed to be under 20cc for multiple days before they could be removed. This seems to be the consensus online as well. I also was instructed no showers until drains were removed.
As far as the bra, I was told to wear the surgical bra or similar compression bra 24/7 for 6 weeks. To me it was more comfortable to have it on anyway.
You may want to consider adding the January surgeries forum to your favorites if you haven't already. I follow the December group and it has been a godsend hearing from others going through surgery the same time as you.
Best of luck to you as you continue to heal.

Also thought I would pass on the amazingly comfortable bra I have been wearing instead of the surgical bra.

LabMom3,
I had BMX with DIEP Flap Reconstruction. I was home and showering 48 hours after my surgery. You should not let any shower water hit your chest. You should turn your back to the shower head and let the water run over your shoulders and down your chest. I wore an oversized front opening sports bra (fruit of the loom from Walmart. My chest hurt down the my sternum also. When I drank cold or hot beverages I could feel it going down. It was so strange. Remember your chest had been through a lot of trauma. It will take several weeks to settle down. I can’t speak to the nipple attachment issue but I do encourage you to address the care specifically of that nipple. Ask him if you can choose to wear your own sports bra. Maybe even take one with you.
At day 9 post-op with drains is about normal. My post-op appointment was on day 12. I had all four of them removed then. I thought if I exercised or moved around more that would help my body release the fluid! NOT!!! The calmer you stay the more your body adjusts and sends the fluid where it needs to go.
Ask away!!! Someone here will try to answer your questions. It sounds like you are doing well

Thank you for responding! Yes, the cold and hot beverages going down! That is so weird!!!! To me that's actually a good sign in that the muscle nerves, etc., are still working, maybe not the ones in the skin so much. But I am used to that.... I had a total of 7 knee surgeries and there was a lot of nerve disruption. Parts of my leg have numbness, then feeling, then numbness, sort of like a dotted line. But the skin on the outside half of my breast hurts to just gently touch it. It feels like an extreme brush burn.
Yes, the shower. I'm doing exactly that per PS instructions. my husband bought me a shower chair so I could sponge bathe the first couple of days, ahhh. It's nice to just sit there now and have the hot water run down my back.
The drain though! I'm over it. I put on my original compression bra last night. It's pretty snug, but it stops the tube from moving, causing pain. no drainahe over night or so far this morning. I haven't had consistent days of 30 or below.
I'm overall happy with how I'm rebounding, I get tired pretty quickly. It'll come.
Thanks again!!!

omg yes. The cold drinks I feel now going down. Wondered if was just me. I am too still having some back aches. Not sure could just be tension related. And tight across chest. My surgery was nov 12.

I get a scapular spasm if I walk or stand to long. A semi reclined position helps. But as long as I can hide it from my ball crazy lab, a tennis ball on the spasm works wonders. You can lay on it or drop it behind you while standing against the wall. I like the wall best because you can then roll the ball across the spasm just by shifting your weight a little. You'll get the hang of it. Learned that from a trainer. Best advice for spasms ever.

Hello I am 16 days post op BMX with reconstruction all in one surgery. I was curious of all the pain, sensation issues people have been feeling. I read that you feel the cold drink and I definitely have that issue, also feel the same when I get chills from being cold. Most of my pain is the underside of boob near incision, my sides just below armpits and sometimes between boobs kinda over sternum. I just was wondering if this is similar pain that other people are having? Just want to rest assure that it is normal pain. It feels like pressure, tenderness and tightness times. Thank you in advance

Hi!
Yes, this is everything I'm feeling. My surgery was on January 4. Although I only had my left side done, with an expander placed and filled with 450 cc's, I feel all kinds of strange things.... Especially drinking cold or hot things.
Right now as opposed to the first 48 hours post op, my entire boob is on fire. I had regular feeling on the outside half but now, the last two days, if I gently rub my fingers across the skin, it feels like a bad brush burn.
I saw the PS yesterday and everything is healing well. No fever, no redness and the drain will come out Friday....I was doing to much and my output was over 100. I brought up all of my pain issues and skin pain and he assures me it's normal. One of his aids said she experienced the exact same things and not to be surprised if I experience changes in the pain and sensations. They both said it's all part of the healing process. I laughed and said that I feel worse now than I did post op. He says that's usually the case, probably because I started doing more around the house than I should be doing.... And he's right!
One thing he explained to me about the lymphatic system is that the drain is in place to help the lymphatic system drain things that it can't handle on its own right after surgery... When we overdo it, the lymphatic system isn't working properly which means the drain is taking over in its place. Makes sense to me because the past two days I've done nothing and my drainage is less than 20 now! Finally! But you probably have your drain out at this point.
Hope you feel better!
