Is anyone taking cdk 4/ 6 inhibitors for early stage breast cancer ? Anyone taking it outside of clinical trials?

What are the side effects? And was your doctor comfortable prescribing cdk 4/6 to you if u are taking it outside of clinical trial ?

I am in my 20s. I was diagnosed with stage 2 hormone positive, her2- breast cancer and have completed the active part of my treatment. Now taking Aromasin and monthly zoladex. I am thinking if I should add on cdk 4/6 to my treatment. But it is not standard treatment since it is still undergoing trials. General prediction from doctors seem to be that the trials will show some benefit in lowering relapse risk for early stage disease, But no doctor can say this with certainty since the experiment is still on-going.

I'm terrified of relapse, So am thinking if I should just take the cdk 4/6 first, since results of the trials will only be out a few years later. I don't want to miss any opportunity to lower my risks. Although if I take cdk 4/6 now it is not evidence-based, I am just gambling that it could benefit me.

Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance..

Hi healthwins, I don't have an answer or any recommendations for you but am interested in this question, too. I am stage 3 and looking at a clinical trial of abemaciclib with hormone therapy once I get through chemo and rads. It's basically addressing exactly the question if a CDK4/6 will prevent recurrence, though starting a little higher up the risk ladder. My onc said he thinks it's the future of treatment for HR+ breast cancers, that they probably won't bother with chemo and will go straight to hormone therapy and CDK4/6 treatment. Anyway, here's a link to the trial: https://clinicaltrials.gov/ct2/show/NCT03155997 I'm keen to hear others' input as well. Good luck whatever you decide!

hi! I don’t know the answer to your question but it did bring up a couple thoughts...

As far as I understand, the CD4/6 kinase inhibitors are typically used for post-menopausal women. I am not sure exactly why. But I had to be first induced (and continue to be so) into medical menopause so that I can take Ibrance.

Sounds like you are very young and this mag be something you’d want to contemplate before going onto this medication.

    Good luck with your decision!

Such a great question. I was diagnosed at 40 with Stage IIb, HR+, HER2-. I'm about to start a clinical trial so that I can take a CDK 4/6 inhibitor to prevent recurrence. It's out of Mass General. I was diagnosed 11/1/2017. Surgery, chemo, radiation and now ovarian suppression and an AI. Had a PET scan on 10/16/18 that came back clean. The Mass General trial is for anyone diagnosed Stage 2-3, currently NED, and within 10 years of finishing treatment.

I'm interested in adding Zometa to my treatment, and my onc was okay with that, even though he hadn't heard there was clinical trial evidence to support that it helps prevent recurrence. I don't think I could talk him into prescribing me a CDK 4/6, hence the trial.

Hi Tidewater, can I ask what trial you’re doing? I’m currently considering MonarchE which is Verzenio/Abemaciclib for2 years for stage 2-3, but I’m really struggling to decide if it is the right move.
