BMX for DCIS Grade 1 - Hormone therapy
I had BMX with reconstruction for DCIS on 12/14 and there were no surprises on my final pathology report. Next week I see a MO which is just standard procedure and I am hoping no further treatment needed.
Has anyone been told they should take hormone therapy after mastectomy for DCIS?

Hi SDWoman
I also had BMX for DCIS - invasive - and I am on arimidex for at least 5 years. Chemo was also a possibility, but the oncologist determined that with my test results and pathology of the tumor, chemo would have done more damage than good.
wishing you the best. Hope you're healing well.

MDRR: when you have invasive BC along with DCIS, your treatment is based upon the invasive dx. SD Woman has pure DCIS. I am clarifying this as I have noticed this confusion on other threads as well and can lead to misinformation. I was given the option of taking a hormonal, but as the benefits were so small according to my dr that I chose to not. Hopefully, you will receive lots of others' experiences here. All the best.

Oh thanks for catching that! I misread it. Yes, my treatment was based on the invasive area found during my initial surgery (lumpectomy). Had no invasion been found, the plan was for 3 weeks of radiation and no chemical treatment!

MDRR and TB90 Thank you both for your replies. Yes, I am looking for others that have had BMX for DCIS only.
I chose BMX because of my extensive family history and to avoid radiation and hormone therapy. I swear I read somewhere that hormone therapy wasn't needed for DCIS that was treated via BMX, but now I can't seem to find that.

I was reluctant to add any more info as it has been awhile and I do not want to mislead you, but having had both breasts removed, hormone therapy will only prevent further progression in the extremely unlikely event that it was not pure DCIS. As the odds of that are so remote, as put by my dr and I still have one breast, the side effects and risks of hormone treatment far outweigh the benefits. But hoping more information comes your way.

Hi there SDWoman - Happy New Year!
I had double MX and no further treatment. Risks far outweigh benefit....now on my final pathology a surprise was found, which was a microinvasion. Tumor board, 2nd opinions - still said no further treatment. The invasive component changed my staging and brought on an entire set of different worries, as the node was not checked on that side. BUT still the recs remained no further treatment - no tamox, AIs, radiation, etc - the treatment is/was considered the removal of the tumor/s. I am in California and went to City of Hope for 2nd and 3rd opinions, but my treatment team is Memorial Care here in LA/OC area.

TB90 and Peacetoallcuzweneedit thank you for your responses. It sounds like what I was thinking to be true. While it may be an option, the risks are greater than any benefit I may get.

SDWoman - I had a BMX for DCIS about a year ago with no further treatment needed. I had an amazing oncologist in the Chicagoland area who is also the husband of a good friend of mine and he said no further treatment was needed.
